Guest jjasonuk Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Just watching a program on Bravo about Aberdeen fans and they said they travelled down to Liverpool in the 80's all as skin heads kicked of in Manchester on the way and couldn't understand the Liverpool fans with no colours on, thought it was brilliant and from that day they all switched to no colours and called themselves the "Aberdeen Casuals". Was going on about how Liverpool started the trend of no colours and wearing tennis and golf clothing with tight jeans / trousers (Farah anybody?) golfing sweaters and white trainers (I thought it was Samba?). Another example of Liverpool fans leading and the rest following, in a few years you watch the rest of the league have loads of banners and scarfs and try to say they started the trends.... We Lead They Follow!
Rico Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Surely "no colours" came before "colours", since replica shirts weren't sold in the old days. Or by colours do you mean red/white scarves etc.? Even then, surely just about every football fan in the country went to watch games wearing no colours if you go back far enough. I wasn't there, I'm just guessing.
Wazz Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Try and get hold of a copy of Nicky Alt's 'Boys from the mersey' Its about the 80's anny road crew and spends quite a bit of time focusing on the clobber. Great read. Also has the definitve guide to bunking in and aquiring free tickets from touts, quite handy if your travelling next week!

Lee W Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Think you'll find the whole casual movement started in Liverpool - and they did sell replica shirts back then. There's a whole chapter devoted to the Scally in this quality book by Phil Thornton

Guest Steve Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 We started moving away from the bover boot and flares look around late 76, though it was only a small group. Saying that I was still seeing flares and feather cuts around Anfield as late as 85. Probably St helens lads. By late 77 most of us had had a wedge and were wearing drainees, jumper or cagool, and trainer of choice. I had a lovely pair of brown Adidas shoes. The Aberdeen lot and mancs weren't far behind. It didn't reach London until the early 80's, though most of it was just sports gear - Fila, Tachini, etc. The London clubs tended to have their own looks and styles.
