Is The Kop too friendly towards opposing keepers?

Has any away goalie ever had a stinker at Anfield? Yesterday, once again, their 'keeper who was able to raise his game and pulled some fantastic saves. It happens so often it's untrue!

There must have been the odd bad performance by the away team's keeper over the years. Scorelines like 7-0 (vs. Spurs) and 9-0 (vs. Palace) sound like this might have been the case, but not necessarily.

"Careless hands" comes to mind, was that Gary Sprake? Oh, and Alonso's lob over the Newcy keeper this season.

Jimmy Rimmer played a blinder for Arsenal and they beat us in the mid-seventies. After the game one journo witnessed him dropping his bag in the Anfield corridor and pointed out that it was the only thing he'd dropped all day.

There are countless examples.

It's a kind of respect but once the game kicks off it's pretty intimidating - ask Petr Cech. ;)

There's very few keepers who haven't been applauded that I can remember. Schmeicel was one, later in his career.

Taibi let a corker in once, straight under his body and through his legs. Wasn't that at Anfield?

no that was versus Soton after he had played a blinder against us in a game we lost 3:2 with Carra scoring the two

and I really don't think that us applauding a GK as he runs to the kop as having any bearing at all on their performace

Wasn't that against Southampton?

Taibi made his debut against us and played an absolute blinder, as far as I can remember. Pretty much single handedly stopped us winning that game.

Definitely should keep the applauding of the oppo keeper. It's something that sets us apart from "the rest"

from Le Tissier wasn't it? Deffo at OT.

anyway - applauding the opposing keeper is a great tradition, respectful, classy and sets us apart from other fans.

kevin pressman always had a stormer against us then would be s**** the next game and usually let in about 6 (and it was usually against man ure).

That's just it, even the crappiest of all crap keepers played well at Anfield...

I rest my case.

One explanation could be that opposing keepers are constantly tested at Anfield and therefore play better, there are no lapses of concentration etc.

PS. I made a gaffe with the subject line, I originally had it as 'Opposing keepers...' but changed it. I never meant the question the tradition...

Yeah, we have such a horrible home record over the years...

My memory's really shot to pieces. I was at that 3-2 game as well.

Nurse!! Nurse!! Get the medication... :(

Too friendly?

Ask Peter Shilton. He'd get an ovation to the Kop, as was only good and proper for a visiting keeper, and then a shout of "Tiiinaa" would go up and various ditties based on his extra-marital activities would get an airing.

Aye, along with your analysis of our home record. :D

What analysis? All I asked was if anyone remembers a goalie having a stinker at Anfield. If you call that analysis, I have to

You see, if an away goalie plays really well, it doesn't necessarily mean that we lose, or even draw. Our home record is second to none, but I think you'll find out that we've drawn a few games and even lost some over the years, so there's still room for improvement

we should always maintain our respect to the keeper..its what we do....

Taibi did make a howler against us - came out way too far for a coss he was never going to get, Sami nodded it into an empty net - but had a stormer after that.

Our telex address (kids - ask your Grandad) used to be Goalkeeper, and we have revered fine Keepers and Keeper performances as far back as I can recall. Banks was cheered louder than our own keeper, and Jennings - who once saved 2 penalties in front of the Kop in 1 game - was treated like a legend, cheered on and off.

One of our finer traditions we should not lose. It still warms me to see the oppo keeper clap back; we shouldn't even boo if he doesn't respond, it's a respect we should offer to all visiting keepers, even Mancs, irrespective of if they give it back or not.
