Blog about VdS

At Anfield, Rafael Benítez was committed to deposing Jerzy Dudek and the penalty shoot-out in the 2005 Champions League final made no difference. The jersey passed to Pepe Reina. He has done reasonably well but makes you feel intermittently that he is yet to mature completely. The job may be more demanding in the best sides, where a goalkeeper has to cling on to his concentration, than it is with weaker teams who are beleaguered as a matter of course.

REASONABLY well??!?!

Christ, what's it take to do brilliantly? The racist Albino was more than competent at f-ing up (as all keepers do) but that seems to have been whitewashed

It's a fair comment.

He's a young keeper, still developing, and has done reasonably well.

But he's not the finished article, well not yet anyway. If there's no room for improvement, and if this represents his peak and he can't get any better, I'd be pretty disappointed.

All keepers make mistakes, just unfortunately for Reina - his spell happened at a time when the whole team was playing poor, thus highlighting it further.

I agree, some people do get over sensitive at the merest hint of criticsm.

Reina has so far looked like he could be the answer for a long time to come, but he does have room for improvement. Also, what will happen in teh Summer if Carson comes back??

Not until he scores from 85yards like englands #1 Paul Robinson can he firmly be called a good goalkeeper.

Matches are NOT won by clean sheets alone, he must start contributing more.

He can get better, but he had already done more than 'reasonably well'. His clean sheets record is phenomenal.

I guess if breaking 'keeper' records strecthing back decades is doing 'reasonably well' then its a fair description.

To Reina? Absolutely nothing. Carson isn't anywhere near his class yet - if indeed he ever will be.

Then Carson sits on the bench.

Sorry, but Reina is a class above Carson, and for that matter, Carson is quite a bit better than Ben Foster. I hope to god fergison does put Foster in goal a head of van der saar next season.

Reina's poor on batting the ball out into the goalmouth when making saves and this often leads to rebound goals.

If he can improve on that - either hold onto it or parry it away from the goal - then he'll be first class, because he's very good otherwise.

I disagree in part. Yes, Reina is the better keeper currently, but, Carson is class as he has proved at Charlton and I hope he is back here next season fighting for the keepers slot with Pepe.

So the article is saying he's done well but has shown signs that he hasn't peaked yet and can/should get better. I'd agree with that

If Carson is for sale (hope not) then what's he worth? £6m? (INCLUDES English Premium Tax)

It says he's done reasonably well. Obviously he can improve, but I'd put him well in the top 10 keepers in the World. Maybe even top 5. If that's doing reasonably well - didn't he break Clemence's clean sheets record? - then I'd hate to see average, or poor

I dont think he is one of the 5 best keepers in the world but he might end up there one day.

He has been great for us and I`m really glad we signed him, he has improved us more than we could dream of, and this is coming from one of Dudek`s biggest fans.

You only need to watch a re-run of the two cup games against arsenal when he didnt play to see how important/good reina actually is

To be fair to Dudek in the LC game - the whole back 5 was changed. It wasn't like he had the 'unit' in front of him, Carra, Agger et al.

Who's better today then?

Kahn is old and rusty, likewise Canizares.

Casillas is a rich-man's Shay Given.

Buffon and Cech I give you.

That leaves Coupet, Toldo, van der Sar, Lehmann...?

i think Reina is class, he has the most clean sheets this season - did i hear that recently or am i making that up?

surely thats a sign of a good keeper?

Salient point highlighted.

Reina has 16, Howard is second with 13 and Jääskeläinen third with 12 clean sheets this season.

Reina is not just class, he's world class.

There's no f***ing satisfying some people. Of course he can get better -he's a committed professional, just as his father was, - and he will get better. We have one of the top goalkeepers in the world FFS.

How many rebounded goals has he caused by coming off his line?

How many clean sheets has he kept since he arrived?

b******s, b******s and more b******s if you don't think he's world class.

He's not the Spain Nº 1 because the Madrid press influence the team selection more than anyone will ever admit in public, - hence Raul, Casillas and the Atletico Madrid players being set features in the national team. Also Casilla brings in a hell of a lot more sponsorship dosh than Reina. That is a very important factor for team selection for the Spanish FA - probably the most important seeing as they are broke and have been for the last three years.
