when was our last truly great transfer(s)? A transfer where we brought in the best player in the team or catalyst to move the team forward to a new level. you've got to go back to the 80's i think. our best players since the early 90's have all come through the ranks...macca, fowler, owen, carra and gerrard are our 5 best players of the last 15 years. we have singularly failed to augment that home grown talent. hopefully under our new owners and a more expansive transfer policy this will change, but its a sobering thought.

Its not like we haven't been trying. Collymore springs to mind. We had about 15 'last piece of the jigsaw' signings under Evans

we've never succeeded though. collymore wasn't fit to clean fowlers boots.

Apparently we have spent slightly more money than the Mancs over the past 15 years and we still haven't delivered the League Title during that period. Every Liverpool manager during that period has had good buys and bad buys but overall you have to say our ability in the market has been very average.

my gut reaction is to say no way we've spent more than the mancs.

They spent £90m on Rooney, Veron and Ferdinand. We've barely spent that in total.

Agree that we need top class players though, Alves would be a good start.

Over 15 years, not so sure...look at all the players that came through their youth system in the 90's, Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Neville, Butt etc then you have the likes of Keane, Cantona and Schmeichel who didn't exactly break any transfer records. Saying that over the past 4-5 years I'd say they have edged it, Rooney Veron, Horse Face, Fedinand, Ronaldo..

You sure about that?

Chuck Saha and Carrick into the mix as well - 12m+ and 18m respectively I think.

No way have we spent more than them in the last 15 years.

We have spent money, our problem is we tend to spend £20M on Diao, Diouf and Cheyrou instead of the cash on Anelka and Duff... or we spend £30M on Kuyt, Pennant, Bellamy and Gonzalez instead of paying out that money on Alves and Huntelaar - who is the real goal getter in the Dutch team and not Kuyt.

But.......Kuyt had a very good record in Holland. It's the style of play that sometimes knackers players up, look at Morientes for eg.

Because most fans are fickle,

When he starts banging in the goals, the same people will be saying 'that Kuyts a class act, blah blah blah'

Why is Kuyt getting so much stick? I really don't understand it.

neither do i. think he's done just fine for his first season and there's obviously more to come from him.

The total over the last 15 years will be ridiculously skewed in favour of the last 7-8, so I doubt it would matter. Keane was a british transfer record when they signed him for £3.75m, you can't compare that to say, £4m for Sissoko, who was a bargain and relatively unknown.

I can't believe for a minute we have spent more than them

Last summer we needed "goalscorer" as we already had someone to hold the ball up and link the play in Crouch. Kuyt is a fanastic player but was he really what we needed bearing in mind most of the time he is playing deep and outside of the area? His job this season has been replacing Crouch, with Bellamy replacing Morientes. As far as goals are concerned the threat hasn't changed much. Kuyt is a great player, just not what we needed last summer.

Boggles my mind. He's great.

No, he isn't. He's played very well at time this season, not so recently. Working hard but touch is poor and little end product.

I think he's exactly the type of player we needed. If anything it's Bellamy who hasn't scored enough goals.

Bellamy is more Cissé's replacement than Morientes.

Kuyt is Morientes' replacement.

Crouch is still here.

Momo cost us around £5.5m

The Keane transfer today would be around the £25m mark.

Whether or not we've spent more than them is not particularly relevant. At the time the Glams were dominant, half their side had just come through their youth system for peanuts. That was just freakish luck.

Our flops pale into insignificance next to the likes of Veron.

Sami was a great signing. Suddenly conceding a corner didn't equate to conceding a goal. We may not have won the title in the past 7 years but we've had some great moments and won some big trophies. Sami's played his part in that and deserves to be considered a great signing.

Possibly Houllier's best signing as a Liverpool manager.
