"... accurate or not, earlier this week well placed sources were putting the odds at '50-50' he'll go."

And a few other quotes from the article:

"On the surface, the complacency from many supporters is understandable, although, sadly, worryingly misplaced."

"Madrid sack managers after a year...the president picks the team and signs the players...he'd never be loved as much as he is by the Kop."

All this may be true, but when your wages could be trebled and your home club tells you they want you to rebuild a young team, over four years, with as much money as you want, it's not as easy for a man from Madrid to say no as a diehard Liverpudlian thinks it is."

"Benitez is adept at allowing a story the legs to run, sometimes giving it a helping hand along the way, before tripping it up before it gets anywhere near a dangerous conclusion."

Is this all Bascombe pulling rabbits out of hats and starting gossip? Is Rafa holding the club hostage here, trying to use LFC as a bargaining tool towards a big Madrid deal... or is he just doing everything he can to get his message through to the Gillett & Hicks..?

Wonder what the hell is going on, but something definitely is....?

there are plenty of stories across the sunday papers linking Rafa to Madrid

I know, but Bascombe's usually pretty well informed that's what bothers me a bit...

Balague's take on things :

WILL RAFA RUN TO REAL?

Hi Guillem, As a Liverpool fan will Rafa Benitez turn down Real Madrid again knowing of all the interference which comes with the job? At my beloved Liverpool he is given full control of football maters and with substantial backing could possibly have a very good team and of course there are the fans who do believe in him. There are not a lot of managers with ability out there with, for the first real time the players coming out in praise of him, which tells me they see his vision of the game which should lead to the team he envisages. Tony, London.

GUILLEM SAYS: Well not to give anything away, but we have an inclusive interview with Benitez on Revista so keep a close eye on what he says because I get the impression that the offer from Real Madrid is very serious and is big in terms of money.

But I also get the impression that if he gets to meet the owners for a second time, they may convince him to stay. It is not about the money, it is about the promise that things are going to change.

So according to both Ballague and Bascombe there's a massive offer on the table from Madrid...

I do believe that Rafa will go back to Spain one day but I hope we see him here at least 10 years more. If he goes back now I'll be in f***ing tears... :(

This is an argument for Rafa getting the funds he wants, when he wants them. Implies he's a shrewd politician as well as a shrewd tactician

Seems to me this week has been about sending a message to the new owners - its a subtle statemtent of intent

To be honest the more I find out about Raphael Benitez - the more impressed with him as a Man I am -- I'm beginning to believe we have the smartest coach in europe ( smartest in serveral areas not just football)

Well if these rumours are true and they are starting to gain some momentum, then it is in the best interests of overyone for the 2 new owners to get on their plane and have the sit down meeting with Rafa and give him what he wants.

IF he did go to Real, who the f*** should we replace him with? I can't think of any manager in the same class that is available.

thats the pertinent point.

People have their heads stuck in the sand if they think he is dead set on sticking it out here regardless of other offers. So many factors would sway him, not least that it's his home town. But family reasons as well amongst other things. And the thing with Rafa, once he has his mind made up, that is pretty much it. Happened at Valencia the same.

Aren't Gillette and/or Hicks supposed to be at today's game - can anyone confirm this?

Hopefully the meeting, if they are here, went well and in the next few days we'll have some better news regarding contract signings and future plans.

I think I read somewhere that a meeting was scheduled for the 30th March...

I thought he was "pushed into a corner" at Valencia?

I agree with you in that, it's not as tough a decision for him to make as some people think.

The main factor which hopefully may have the strongest influence on his decision to stay, is the unfinished business of the premiership.

Cheers for the info re: Hicks and Gillette

circumstance very different at Valencia of course, but what I mean (and didn't explain!), was that once he made his mind up to go, it didn't matter what Valencia's bosses said or did, he wouldn't budge. Of course there where many factors, but you know that Rafa is pretty damn stubborn ;)

This would indeed be very depressing. We'd have to start all over again. Arrggghhhh don't know if I could take it.

Saying that we are still miles off the pace in the league and at the moment I don't see us making up those points unless at least 5 class players arrive.

I dont think it would be a matter of starting over again although if Rafa did leave you'd have to worry about maybe Reina and Alonso sticking around. Hopefully he thinks he has some unfinished business here and the new owners give him the assurances he wants.

Certainly the way we've been planning suggests his future is here with all these young players being signed, im sure his heart is at Madrid but he also knows the problems at that club and they dont exactly have a reputation of being patient with managers even though theres clearly lots of work that needs to be done there i doubt they'll give their managers that time.

With the new stadium and new owners these are exciting times and providing he gets the answers he wants i think he'll be here for the foreseeable future so he can win that league title.
