when he was in spain what sort of record did he have for his previous clubs in terms of bringing in youth players and developing them into first teamers?

does he even have what could be considered a track record being as he had never stayed as a manager for long?

What players that he brought into places like Extremadura and tenerife have gone on to greater things?

Fyds would know the answer to that one. ;)

He took a Barcelona younster on at Tenerife, his name was Luis Garcia.

And he took an Auxerre youngster on at Valencia and gave him his debut at 17, his name was Momo Sissoko.

He managed Madrids B and C sides at some point didn't he which are pretty much youth teams (with a few older players granted).

The problem we have with so many young players is we don't play enough games at reserve team level for all of them to get decent playing time.

I'm sure we'll see more of our youngsters out on loans ..... this invest in youth approach is definately the way to go

Of course, the more we sign the greater the chance of finding a star but we need a firmer structure that guarentees, as much as possible, some serious playing time for these kids especially if they're going to bypass the youth teams and go straight to the reserves.

Could do with a proper feeder team or two that we can ship players out to. Utd and Arsenal have certainly made good use of them.

The reserve league in this country needs an overhaul. I understand that many aren't keen on the idea of a 'B' team entering the football league, that's fairnuff. But the reserve league is a joke here, it isn't helping us that much. There isn't enough games for starters. Surely they can somehow get a more competitive league for these reserve teams, and more games, maybe having playoffs and / or cup competitons between the southern teams for instance?

Rafa's spoken out about the reserve level not being good enough as has Maurenho, and maybe if they and some other high profile managers keep on speaking out about it, something will be done. These players need more competitive games.

Guess Crewe Alex isnt working out for us, as I thought we were to send our academy kids there as well as get first choice of their kids

we need to get a proper feeder club sorted, i'm sure there are sides in the championship, league one and two etc, who would love a few of our youngsters out on loan. teams that are close by, like Burnley, Crewe, Accrington, Bury, wrexham etc would be ideal. even get something similar to what the Mancs have with Royal Antwerp

Totally agree. The players don't develop at all. It's glorified training.

look, due to a severe lack of beerage, i've just drank a litre of malibu. i forgot about trannie :bleh:

:D

Suppose there's too many small clubs knocking around Merseyside to name them all.

Not sure about this 'feeder club' idea thats being talked about in this thread.

Its too inflexible. What professional outfit are going to require players that just happen to suit the young players we have available ? Say we have a right back, a goalkeeper, 2 central midfielders and a deep lying centre forward all under 21 and they need experience. How is a proper professional club going to fit them all into their team regularly.

its far better to do it on a case by case basis and build relationships with lots of smaller clubs home and abroad. Southampton needed a midfielder, we had Guthrie, Luton needed a striker and we had Bez etc.

We just need to do that but more of it IMHO.

Personally I would love Tranmere or Crewe to take half our youngsters for a season, so they can get regular footy --- Crewe would be my first Choice and D Gradie has a history of bringing the best out of youngsters

Its just a shame we cant turn Tranmere into our "Academy Team"
