CarraLegend Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Dunno what the stats say about how many goals have been scored this season and what have you but looking at the top goalscoring charts after nearly 30 games in the League it looks a bit grim. Drogba has 18Ronaldo 16 (Penalties and free kicks amongst those) Then far behind is Yakubu with 12 (Good few pens) Van Persie 11 Doyle, Henry, Johnson, Kanu, Martins, McCarthy, Rooney 10 Bent, Kuyt, Mcbride 9 Is it me or does that not great after 27/28/29 games depending on what team you play for, I know strikers have had injuries like Henry, Bent but theres always someone injured each season so cant really use that one as an excuse. Is it a lack of quality strikers in the League? Is it harder to score now for strikers? Or maybe im just looking at it totally wrong and its infact no different to any other season and it looks worse than it is.
Gunga Din Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 i think its a lack of out and out poachers. managers seem to want strikers to offer more than just goals. Van Shergar was probably the last out and out poacher to play in the league, and that horse faced c*** scored shed loads. i would love us to go out and find someone who could just stick the ball in the net, a Rush or a a Fowler, but my opinion is that the natural talent is being coached out of them at acadamies in favour of a a more balanced and rounded game.
Ombudsam Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 I can't believe Rob the Rapist has scored that many. The likes of Phillips, Shearer, RvN, Fowler and ferdinand used to score shed loads. Henry when he was the best in the world got something like 28goals and 20 assists in one season but that took him being the best player in the world. RVN was the last top class out and out in the league but managers seem to want players who do more I think than just poach
Guest Anders Honoré Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) The thing is most of these 'poachers' were all quite capable of doing more than just poach. Players like Owen, Hasselbaink, Henry, Ferdinand, Shearer, Cole, Solskjaer, Fowler were all players who could do something with the ball as well. I think there's just a draught of good strikers at the moment. edit: I think a hasselbaink in his prime would have been the perfect striker for us now. Physically strong, held the ball up well, combined well and scored goals galore. He wasn't even the best of the lot back then. Probably would be today. Edited March 4, 2007 by Anders Honoré
Knox_Harrington Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Think the standard/intelligence/emphasis of defending has improved dramatically since the mid-90s.

It's probably telling that their team (Man U) was more successful before the horse joined them and has now become more successful again since he's left.
George Costanza Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Think the standard/intelligence/emphasis of defending has improved dramatically since the mid-90s. what he said. it'd take some feat to score 30 premiership goals nowadays
Ombudsam Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 It's probably telling that their team (Man U) was more successful before the horse joined them and has now become more successful again since he's left. They won the league with him there and the FA Cup
John am Rhein Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 They won the league with him there and the FA Cup But still. They were better before him and they've gone better again since he left. And that 2003 championship winning side was probably their worst which won the League (except maybe 1994). It was a travesty that Arsenal didn't win that one.
