Guest Anders Honoré Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Just got thinking about what liverpool players might have had, or have, legitimate claims to being the best in the world in their position when they played. And narrowing it down, who, as hard as that is to define, might have had legitimate claims to being the best player in the world at some point or another. Obviously we have Gerrard today. Any takers?
Rimbeux Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Kenny Barnes Souness Rush Gerrard off top of my head, sure it wont be much different to most. Anyway we've always been about TEAM

Guest Anders Honoré Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I'm trying to think of a rightwinger who might have been better than McManaman in his prime, but no one comes to mind. Hässler maybe?
The Hitman Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 (edited) Dietmar Hamann?I'd say he was in the top 3 central holding midfielders, maybe not the best though. Edited March 1, 2007 by Pretty Boy

fred milne Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I'm trying to think of a rightwinger who might have been better than McManaman in his prime, but no one comes to mind. Hässler maybe? He was at his best playing through the middle, rather than as a right-winger.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 FowlerOwen Difficult to quantifybest in the world really Aye. I settled for 'legitimate claim'. Whilst I can't think of anyone of a striker who was better than Owen back in 2001, Fowler had the bad luck of playing when Shearer was scoring goals all over the place. Even if Fowler might have been as good or better a player than Owen. Figo? Think he was still making a name for himself for Sporting Lisbon at the time. He was at his best playing through the middle, rather than as a right-winger. Hässler or Macca?

Fowler was a better footballer and goalscorer than Owen IMO. Owen was s*** quick and more determined.
Stevie H Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 the only ones i can think of as total and absolute definites without any genuine competitor claims would probably be john barnes and kenny. that said it's a hard one to judge as there wasn't the exposure of foreign players to uk tv audiences back when the likes of hansen, lawwrenson, nicol, souness and rush were playing.
