Cunny Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 it's Maddock, lifted quote from Parry's letter to STHs and £20m http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/tm_...-name_page.html RAFA'S READY TO KOP ETO'OEXCLUSIVEBy David Maddock 28/02/2007 More Football LIVERPOOL manager Rafael Benitez has been told to spend big in the summer - and has started at the very top by making an approach for Samuel Eto'o. Benitez was assured that he will finally be given the funds to compete with the major powers in Europe, when the £450million Anfield takeover by American tycoons Tom Hicks and George Gillett is completed. Top of his shopping list is a striker, and Benitez has paved the way for a summer move by approaching Barcelona over the services of Eto'o. The Cameroon star has fallen out with team-mate Ronaldinho and manager Frank Rijkaard, and sources at the Nou Camp suggest that he will go - unless the pair are forced out of the exit door before him. Chelsea and Arsenal are also both tracking Eto'o, but Liverpool have stolen a march by using Benitez's Spanish contacts. The former Valencia boss tried to sign Eto'o from Real Mallorca when he sold Michael Owen to Real Madrid two years ago, but was beaten to the punch by big-spending Barca. Now though, he has the money to make an offer that will be hard to refuse, with the wealthy American owners sanctioning a £20million deal for the right striker. Anfield chief executive Rick Parry said yesterday: "The future of the club is in safe hands, and from the team perspective, funds will be made available for the manager to strengthen what is already an excellent playing squad. In tandem with this, building work will start very soon on our new stadium complex in Stanley Park." i Benitez has already drawn up a hit list of forwards he wants to bring to the club, with Eto'o at the top. And it has been revealed in Italy that Liverpool have made contact with Udinese over their £6millionrated striker Vincenzo Iaquinta. The Italy star - who played in the World Cup Final in the summer - has been told he can leave the club at the end of the season. While Benitez may be looking to clear some of his forwards out, one who will not be leaving is Dirk Kuyt. And the Dutchman believes that Liverpool have come into form at just the right time, and are ready to put one over their old rivals United at the weekend. "We need to go and approach the game as we've done in the last week," he said. "If you can win in Barcelona with their quality, you know you can beat most teams."
Kahnee Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Journalistic genius And was the Eto'o stuff not just interweb bunkum from here?
Cunny Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 And was the Eto'o stuff not just interweb bunkum from here? interweb bunkum = 'sources close to the club'
Cunny Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Figaro = 'spanish contact'? I just thought he was a name dropping c***?
Kahnee Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I just thought he was a name dropping c***? Not through choice - its actually his job description
honourablegeorge Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I've decided to believe this is true. In fact, I've just wet myself.
Magic8Ball Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Mind games surely - I know Eto'o is good but I think Trezeguet is the closet thing to Fowler there is out there, given Rafa's comments on Robbies finishing I would have thought the list would be more like Trezeguet, VillaEto'oIaquinta, Bojinov Trez is the only one we stand a chance of getting for less than 20m
Cunny Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 I saw a report valuing Iaquinta at £6m
Magic8Ball Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I saw a report valuing Iaquinta at £6mmy bad I meant of the top 3 not the lower 2
Lee W Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 It can't be true, as there's no mention of a warchest.
Cunny Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liv...-name_page.html Benitez linked with move for Eto?oFeb 28 2007 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post RAFAEL BENITEZ has again been linked with a summer move for controversial Barcelona striker Samuel Eto?o. Television reports in Spain yesterday suggested the Liverpool manager is lining up a swoop for the Cameroon international at the end of the season. Premiership rivals Chelsea and Arsenal also said to be tracking the 25-year-old, who has been tipped to depart the Nou Camp after a series of disagreements with Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard. Benitez is a known admirer of Eto?o, who worked under the Spaniard when he was in charge of the Real Madrid academy, and is poised to shake-up his striking resources in the transfer window bolstered by backing from Liverpool?s new owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks. The Liverpool manager attempted to sign Eto?o as part of the deal that took Michael Owen to the Bernabeu in August 2004, only for the player to choose a move to Barcelona instead. Eto?o has recently been at the centre of controversy at the Nou Camp over his return to fitness following four months out with a serious knee injury, and missed Barcelona?s 2-1 Champions League defeat to Liverpool last week. However, he started and scored in the 3-0 La Liga win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, although he has been rested for Barcelona?s Copa del Rey meeting with Real Zaragoza this evening.

Benitez Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 or a swoop, i'm confused "Television reports in Spain yesterday suggested the Liverpool manager is lining up a swoop for the Cameroon international at the end of the season." We need a 'break the bank' though. And this: "Benitez is a known admirer of Eto?o, who worked under the Spaniard when he was in charge of the Real Madrid academy" How come every player who've been on Real Madrid's books, even young players, have 'worked with Rafa' when he was at Real Madrid. Really, some of them would have been toddlers

Romario Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 The press are just putting one and Eto'o together. Saying that I bought him for my masters league team and him and Juyt just won me the league with Eto'o scoring over 30 goals!! No. 19!
fyds Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Ballague was on Revisita la Liga the other day saying Et'o was definitely off and we were his most likely destination. Fuel to the damp squib? Hey ho!
Cunny Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Balague's track record on these things is akin to BB's!!
Leo No.8 Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 (edited) F*ck me, I don't think there's a striker in the game I'd like here more than Eto'o. If he is leaving Barca, I'm sure Rafa will be in for a player of his quality. Hopefully a taste of Anfield on a special night will make him want to come here. Then the only thing that could scupper us would be if Glenn Roeder declared his interest, leaving us hoping and praying he'd step aside to let Eto'o come here... Edited February 28, 2007 by Leo No.8
