Guest RedIsMyColour Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Very very good debut. He is only a small lad but he gets right stuck in there, neat and tidy in possession and already looks like he could be a top player for us. Saying that though you don't get 22 caps for Argentina by the age of 22 if you're s****.
DaveLFC Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I think his confidence will have taken a big boost today, it was the perfect game to debut in. Looking forward to seeing a lot more of him in a red shirt.
Guest Portly Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I also thought he looked promising. He didn't try anything too spectacular on his début but everything he did, he did well.
Barnesy_10 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 excellent debut.Couldn't believe how small he is. I always thought he was tall! Some great tackles and promising runs.
Ginu Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 i see a lot of alonso's defensive work in him... i think they'll complement each other a lot... i was even having trouble telling the difference between them in our third when he was winning the ball
Mike Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 i like him.tigerish busy little b*****d.considering he's hardly played he was very good, and you have to think he will only get better.
miceal Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 (edited) I thought he was fantastic for a man who hasn't had a game for months. He tackled well and he really set things up well once he had won the ball. Easy debut, yes, but with matches will come sharpness. I don't usually get so excited after one game. On the other hand, Kuyt ...... If work-rate was worth £10m he would be a bargain....but at £10m it's goals that matter. Edited February 24, 2007 by miceal
4411 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Excellent debut, tough game for anybody to make a debut in, especially if you're not used to English footie. But as they say, you can always spot a class player by his touch and ability and he showed that today.
Cunny Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 promising debut, grew in confidence as the game went onto get 90 minutes out of him was a big bonus as wellDidi may well have been replaced!

His hold up/link up play was superb. MOTM on spanish TV so at least they agree with me. Doesnt matter if he doesnt score when others players knock 4 past them...
R A Softlad Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 (edited) excellent debut.Couldn't believe how small he is. I always thought he was tall! Some great tackles and promising runs. 5' 9"... so yes he is tall. Edited February 24, 2007 by R A Softlad
libero Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 5' 9"... so yes he is tall. Well if you put him next to Sabre he would be Crouchesque by comparison
chrisbonnie Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I don't understand how anyone can criticise Kuyt after that superb performance. His hold up/link up play was superb. MOTM on spanish TV so at least they agree with me. Doesnt matter if he doesnt score when others players knock 4 past them... he was motm in my house as well, i thought he was superb, simply, superb!!! back to the thread, great debut for Macherano, as we know, a handy enough to make your debut in, but he still performed to a far better level than i think anybody expected of him, particularly seeing as he hanst played in months
Benitez Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Mascher was excellent Didn't expect him to last the game, but he was still going strong right at the end. His confidence will indeed have been given a huge boost today. A very compact, controlled player, and very assured as well. You can just tell the lad has a lot of class!
Romario Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Question: why did we have to pay West Ham to get him on loan for 18 months? Either he's a loan or we bought him?I'm confused! Must be the rugby.
Bootle Buck Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Let's face it if Rafa would have signed him after the WC last year we would have been well chuffed. However, he came to WHU in unusual circumstances and didn't get sniff. Today we saw the potential the lad has. At 22 and still learning his trade, he is going to be a top class player. Thank God Rafa made the move for him at a time WHU were daft enough not to play him. I just wish we had locked him up on a permanent move. My big fear would be his management team may look to offload him for the highest price if he starts catching the eye for us. Does anyone know if we have the fisrt rights to buy him?
Benitez Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Liverpool paid £1.5 mill according to the Echo, who it was paid to, I have no idea
San Diego Red Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Well if you put him next to Sabre he would be Crouchesque by comparison He looks very small compared to Carra
Rimbeux Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Did you see the running and game on Alonso when he came on to partner him, Gerrard-like he was..

Bascombe said today it's £1.5m for 18 months but more if we want to keep him. I'm sure we must have some first option on the lad as he was chased in the summer by Real, Scum and Chelsea. I can't see Rafa getting the lad fit and going only for another club to buy him from under us. Wasn't it £25m the fee mentioned in the summer before MSI hoaked him off to West Ham?
fred milne Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 (edited) I wouldn't say it was an outstanding debut but I thought he got better as the game wore on. In the first half he seemed a bit lost and Gerrard was effectively doing the work of two. Having said that, you would expect him to be ring-rusty and he was being closely marked by Tonge. Coyler Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 (edited) Having said that, you would expect him to be ring-rusty and he was being closely marked by Tonge. That's right. Watching him in the first half really brought home how good Alonso is at finding space to receive the ball, even if someone's detailed on him. Edited February 24, 2007 by Coyler
lfc003 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 i read that we brought him for £10mill but MSI can buy him bk at the end of the 18months if we don't extend the deal
RafaShanks Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 i read that we brought him for £10mill but MSI can buy him bk at the end of the 18months if we don't extend the deal The £1.5m in the Echo sounds more plausable to be honest for the 18 month loan deal. If he continues to impress, I'm sure Rafa would want to tie up a permanent deal in the summer. Thought he was excellent today, especially when you consider he's hardly had any pitch time this season. He will only get better and better. as he's only 22. West Ham could have done with him today. Feckin idiots.
Magic8Ball Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 maybe we bought 18months of his contract for 1.5m and have the option of owning him outright for 10m come the end of the loan
