nrkintheuk Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/SirBobPaisley/ Self explanatory really - its never too late!
Falconhoof Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 There are a few men who are too good for that sham of an honours system. Bob Paisley was one of them.I'd remember Bob for what he is to Liverpool than for what the government could ever claim to remember him for.
Rushian Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Another waste of time. They don't award posthumous knighthoods.
Ripley Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Another waste of time. They don't award posthumous knighthoods. And even they did, you can still stick it.
nrkintheuk Posted February 20, 2007 Author Posted February 20, 2007 I agree - can't stand the honours system as typified by the ginsoak scenario. Always had more respect for Bowie because he's apparently refused (and doesn't like to talk about it. The Benjamin Zephaniah thing the other year was an eye opener too. But.... the award may have given some pride to the man himself and his family and who am I to foist my beliefs on them? Didn't know they don't do posthumous ones though. Always assumed Cliff Richard was dead when he got his - why else would he be encased in formaldehyde?
Cliff M Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 (edited) Just read this in the Echo online: Campaign to knight Reds? Bob PaisleyFeb 20 2007 Liverpool Echo BOB PAISLEY could finally be in line for a knighthood, more than 10 years after his death. Tony Blair's Downing Street e-petition website is getting internet demands for a posthumous honour for the manager who steered Liverpool FC to nine European and domestic league titles. Over the past 24 hours, 164 fans have registered their support with No 10. Lifelong Reds fan Ian Little, who launched the petition, said: ?Bob Paisley was England's best ever manager and won the European Cup three times while manager of Liverpool, yet he only ever received the OBE. ?He also won the domestic league title six of the nine years he was in charge. Alex Ferguson has only won the European Cup once, yet he received a knighthood. ?This is not equitable.? The prime minister has already said he will ?take notice? of voters who express an opinion to him online. An aide said: ?He treats this new innovation, e-petitions direct to his office, as people power in action, and if enough fans log on in sufficient numbers then he will consider it.? Merseyside MPs are offering full support. Knowsley North MP and Reds fan George Howarth said: ?It would be a very fitting tribute, a reward not just for what he did for Liverpool FC, but also for what he did to raise the game in general. ?He was the quiet man of football, but his contribution should be recognised.? Bootle MP Joe Benton said: ?I fully endorse this, even though as an Everton fan I have very many good reasons to regret his stewardship of Liverpool. ?He was one of the most respected football managers in my lifetime, and indeed in the history of football.? Paisley was a Liverpool player from 1939 to 1954 and succeeded Bill Shankly as manager in 1974. Over the next nine seasons Liverpool won six league titles and finished second twice, three League cups, one Uefa cup, one European Super cup and five charity shields. He was the only man to coach three European cup winning sides. After his death in 1996 the club named one Anfield entrance the Paisley Gate, as they had previously done with the Shankly Gate. YOU can sign the petition by logging on to http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/SirBobPaisley and completing the short form. Petitioners have until March 13 to sign up. Edited February 20, 2007 by Cliff M
£440,000 Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 I hope it never happens. The man won all the honours that matter.
Gomez Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 I understand why some people don't want it, the honours system this country has it's problems not just the dubious honours people who have donated or promoted the governing party, but also the link to the monarchy which a lot of people find distasteful. However, I still signed the petition as there is no doubt Bob Paisley should have been offered when he was alive, his achievement far outstripped other sporting figures who have been awarded knighthood's (and this really shouldn't be turned into a ferguson's got one so Bob should have one thing), but as the goverment at the time hated football and its fans, he was overlooked. Had he been offered one it would have been up to him to accept or decline and now it should be up to his family to decide. They should at least be offered one. Whether or not you can award them posthumously is irrelevant, you can't sell them for cash either but it hasn't stopped it from happening. It is not a unbreakable law of physics. There will always be a first time.
Redwire Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 It's absolutely pointless. I agree. He's dead now so it's too late.
Knox_Harrington Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 It's absolutely pointless.Almost insanely so.
Guest Scot Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Agree with everyone who said it's a pointless waste of time
matty Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 You'd have to make him Duke of Rothesay for it to sum up what Paisley means to Liverpool. But it cannot and will not, and should not happen. Can't make out why people are so bothered about this.
Nerik Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Link is not working. It is a travesty that Paisley was never awarded such an honour. I do not know whether it actually bothered him or not. He did, as some have stated, win all the honoues that counted!
Mike Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 he's a footballing legend of near unparralleled success, known through out the sporting world. Inextricably linked to Liverpool FC in a manner that transcends his club, country and sport.that's honour enough.
fyds Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 More real kudos for us that he hasn't got it. Though when alive, you can bet Bob would have liked it a lot, he was of that generation. Way too late now though.
Gomez Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Looking at some of the other petitions on that site. There are some f**kin nutters out there. We the Christian population of this great country England would like the proposed plan to build a Mega Mosque in East London Scrapped. This will only cause terrible violence and suffering and more money should go into the NHS.
Buzz Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 (edited) If anything else, Paisley should of got the manager of the last century award that ferguson got, that was a travesty of justice! Edited February 21, 2007 by Buzz
Big E Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 'The greatest side for you to see, 3 European Cups for Bob Paisley' Thousands back Bob?s knighthoodFeb 27 2007 by Ian Hernon, Liverpool Echo TONY Blair?s inbox has been swamped with thousands of supporters backing the posthumous knighthood for Bob Paisley. The ECHO revealed the campaign for the Reds great had been logged with No 10 last Monday. Since then, the few hundred backers have been swelled by more than 12,000. The petition now stands in 10th place of the 3,850 on the prime minister?s own site, introduced to encourage "people power". Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Only major national issues such as calls to scrap inheritance tax, hospital closures and the hunting act, and in support of the Red Arrows and the Royal Navy, are ahead of the Paisley petition. Petitions which are behind it include calls to abolish faith schools, give professional status to engineers and sack Ruth Kelly. A Whitehall source said: "It has really taken off and it would be difficult to ignore if it really goes stratospheric." Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy said: "It would be a fitting tribute to a great manager." The e-petition was tabled by Liverpool fan Ian Little, who pointed out that Bob Paisley steered the club to a record three European Cup titles, yet was only awarded the OBE. He said: "Manchester United's Alex Ferguson has only won it once yet he got a knighthood. That is not equitable." Support for the petition, which closes on March 13, has flooded in from across Merseyside, the UK and beyond. A Westminster constitutional expert said there is nothing in the honours rules to prevent a posthumous knighthood. Bob Paisley played for Liverpool between 1939 and 1954 and in 1974 replaced Bill Shankly as manager. Over the next nine seasons the club won three European Cups, six League titles, one European Super Cup, one UEFA Cup and five Charity Shields. After his 1983 retirement he continued to serve as a director. He died, after suffering from Alzheimer's, in 1996.
