Leo No.8 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Everyone will remember Stevie Gerrard's famous (or infamous) 'who's the man' celebration around the time he was unsettled here, I think it was when he scored a screamer against Portsmouth at home. I thought last night you saw a mark of how settled he is now, in that he's accepted someone else can be the man as well! If anyone has it on tape or Sky+ from last night, watch when all the players jump on top of Kuyt after his screamer. Stevie is grabbing him, gesturing his head towards him in an animated way and you can make him out going 'you're the f*cking man, you're the man' or something along those lines... I think him and Kuyt have struck up a good understanding already, and you can tell there's a lot of mutual respect there as well - the goal against PSV at Anfield was the best example but there have been some nice interchanges between the two of them. Funny enough I thought Kuyt stunk the place out in the first half yesterday, after me backing him over his first touch the other week it was awful! But I remember a point where he lost it and chased all the way back to the corner flag to tackle the West Ham player, and thats what you get from him, outstanding effort and work rate even when he's not at the top of his game. Oh and great goals, don't forget them! I reckon Stevie is right, Dirk Kuyt really is the man as well. In fact we've got a few of them at the moment...
Herbie von Smalls Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 dirk is the man. the commentators on 5live were tripping over themselves to praise his workrate and his seamless transition to english football. mark bright was practically choking on his own effusiveness.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I like his work rate but I really love his ability on the ball and awareness - its really top notch !
Ronnie Whelan Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 No doubt about his workrate really, thats there for everyone to see. Now he is in double figures and could well be heading for 20 this season which would be an immense total for a first season in a new league.
Cobs Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 aye he had a dreadful 1st 45 mins but you have to admire that he still never hides and runs his socks off for the team
McBain Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I think he's fantastic and has been a complete success so far. But his first half last night was really bad. That's the thing about strikers. They can redeem themselves with one touch
Magic8Ball Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Kuyt reminds me of Shearer in his later days

That's the thing about strikers. They can redeem themselves with one touch So true. If one of our centre-halves played as badly as Dirk did in the first half, we'd be 2-0 down going into the break! He looked like he couldn't trap a bag of cement. Is it any wonder in school everyone always wants to play up front?
JRC Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I'm a nervous TV Watcher, so I took the Dog out at Half-Time, fulminating under my breath at how poor Kuyt and Crouch had been, and how a lack of control up front had let WHU off the hook in the first half-hour, and even back into a game they didn't deserve to be in. I got back about 10 minutes into the 2nd Half. I didn't even need to ask my lad who'd scored the goals....
_00_deathscar Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I'm a nervous TV Watcher, so I took the Dog out at Half-Time Prison slang?
Philby Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I had £5 on 2-0 with Dirk scoring first...needless to say I wasn't a happy man when that offside goal went in - c****
Guest Sabre Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 aye he had a dreadful 1st 45 mins but you have to admire that he still never hides and runs his socks off for the team You're right. He was rubbish in the first half - was really struggling to find his feet. I love the man though cos he always finds you something extra when you need it.
Bootle Buck Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I thought Dirk had a stinker last night but that goal helped. Have to say though it was a very rare poor game and a lot had to do with our team being very narrow and compact. He did look tired though.
Guest Sabre Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I think he plays the role well. The pitch didn't help - it was quite strangely bumpy. His touch was off but I also think West Ham defended well in the first half and restricted our forwards to deep positions.
McBain Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 I love Kuyt. The ugly b*****d Great words here http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liv...-name_page.html

I think that's what makes the guy pretty special. He works hard and isn't afraid to admit when he's been poor.
CarraLegend Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 His celebration was quality the other day, it was a "How the f*** have I just done this after that first half" type thing. And thats exactly what we need him to do, when he's not playing well still produce something like that. He's been an outstanding signing. Averaging a goal every 2 and a quarter games in the League now and has been involved in the moves of countless others.
anny road Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 can we have a thread with people saying they are not convinced yet? f***wits now then......I love the way he celebrated and during it the realisation that he has a) scord a screamer and b)probably won us 3 more points hit him and he puts his hand on his mouth genuinely nice and guy and red through and through I love him (not in a Xabi way)
Mr Makaveli Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 You're right, Kuyt did skint up the palce in the first half, I remember texting my friend and sayingit but that i wouldn't take him off as it might come good for him... sure enough, when you put in as much effort as he does you can turn a bad day into a good one. people talk a lot about his effort which is fantastic, but what makes me such a huge fan of his is his teamplay and intelligence. he is not at all selfish and this benefits our results no end. This plus his ability to link up so so well with the other creative players int he team really does give liverpool a cuttign edge that they really didnt have before... we can now carve open those weaker teams who come to anfield for a draw. that is no longer an option for them and this is part of what Kuyt and the other players are doing right this term. With the way things are going, I really am wondering if maybe we are the best team in the premiership... however I am very worried that we will not show it.. Im worried that we will start poorly again next term and be faced with an almost impossible task of climbing back up with a record breaking run of wins... I am optumistic for this season though which says a lot about the confidence in our team to actually win each game as it comes. We are talking about gaining huge ground on utd and chelsea even though there is a fairly large gap there. It's a very very tall order however I am going to watch this space a long with many other people... a few results go our way and things might really start to heat up.
hideNseek Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 His 100% commitment makes him my player of the year by a mile.
