Passed test... need a car

Well, at the age of 29 I managed to pass my practical driving test (1st time)... passed it this morning at the test centre in Garston... the wife is due to give birth on March 5th, so did it just in time!

 

Anyone know of any reliable second hand dealers in Liverpool? I am after a Golf or similar and don't know anything about the inner workings of a car so I don't really want to go private sale.... I have about £4-5k aside for a car. I just don't want a dealer who will take advantage of me being a new driver etc... I have ridden motorbikes since the age of 16 so cars have been the last thing on my mind... but now I wish I knew more about what was a good or bad one so I don't buy me a duffer!
