...which would have been a bit bizarre but instead keeps scoring for Barca. His goals to games record there is absolutely phenomenal, I don't really understand why he fell out of favour there. Very quick, skilful and can really finish.

He's on a free in the summer, so I'd have thought Rafa with his knowledge of the Spanish game and penchant for a bargain would have been all over that one. Must be something he doesn't like in him as a player I suppose, perhaps he doesn't work hard enough for his liking...

PS to deal with any pedantry in advance I know it's Saviola just missed the i out by accident...:)

He has a respiratory condition or something like that I think. Read it somewhere before. He's pretty similar to Owen, and I think that's the type of player we need, but Laporta is under big pressure to give him a new contract because of his current form.

Owen is a good comparison. I think he'd be ideal as a replacement for Fowler as that would balance our four forwards with two being strong and able to hold the ball up and two being lightning quick goalscorers.

When I looked at his stats he'd scored better than a goal every other game in his first couple of seasons at a tender age then got dropped and sent on loan. I don't really understand that respiratory problem or not.

It's all politics out there it really is...

Would he not be someone who needs a lot of time on the ball to be successful?

We need someone who's used to the quick pace of British Football and the physical nature of some of the tackles.

For Owens lack of size he's brave and pretty strong as well as a fairly tenacious character both mentally and physically. I don't know if the same applies to Savola. He always seems to shin when he has space and dissapear when things become more physical.

I've no idea if he'd be brilliant or a flop to be honest.

Part of the problem with Saviola dates back to Gaspart's presidency at Barca - Saviola is one of the best paid players at the club - a negative legacy of Gaspart. He saddled the club with long term contracts at exorbitant rates, using the TV deals as backing funds. He nearly bankrupted the club.

When Saviola was on loan at Sevilla CF half his wages were paid by Barca - Sevilla CF offered him a 4 year deal on condition he took a 50% wage drop. Saviola refused because he knew that he had one year left at Barca and then he was a free agent. he did at one point indicate that he would accept a 20% drop but Sevilla delined to take him up.

Rijkaard was told by Laporta not to include Saviola in his plans at the beginning of the season and the club mounted a concerted effort to get rid. Saviola refused to budge. Once it was clear that they were stuck with the player laporta relented and the plan is to try and sell before June.

Sevilla CF have a gentleman's agreement with both Barca and Saviola - this could also involve Alves going north. The main stumbling block for any potential buyer is his current wage.

I mentioned this time last year when he was at Sevilla - that he was incapable of playing a full 90 minutes - he had a serious respiratory problem. The medical staff at Sevilla did everything they could to help him but their opinion was that he was stuck with the problem for life.

I said a while back I think Saviola is one of those players who just needs the right environment to become a star and that I reckon Rafa could give him that.

He doesn't have Owen's tenacity and I think is more prone to being bullied but his first touch is second to none and he has a lot of skill on the ball. I'd love us to sign him.

The original deal was ?36 million Euros and a basic net wage of ?3 million plus bonuses etc, etc.

Gaspart then gave him a pay rise after his first two months when he was 'unhappy'. There were other additional increases and he was supposed to receive a bonus of a ?million per goal 60% of which was to be paid by the Catalan TV station A3. The TV station quickly re-sold their part of his image fees back to the club.

Laporta renegotiated Saviola's contract reducing certain sums by as much as 15%.

The club have now made it known that they are willing to offer the player a new contract and Saviola has stated his intention of accepting a "reduced" wage if he can stay at Barca.

Yep they have but I doubt 2/3 of them are in the clubs plans... Raul isnt prolific and neither is robinho and higuains new to the league so if Rvn gets injured... they'd be pretty screwed presumin ronaldo is goin elsewhere...

Heard that press conference on the radio. Bloody idiot. Not exactly the best way to ensure your popularity with the Barca fans, is it?

Saviola is on ?4.5 million basic net atm plus ?30,000 match fee plus ?650,000 per goal - that does not include cup games and goals and CL games and goals - that info comes from inside Can Barca. I checked as I knew that laporta had reduced gaspart's ridiculous figures.

Why pay so much for the youngster - it was to counteract Madrid's mediatic signing of Zidane. gaspart wanted to match the money that Madrid were throwing around at that time.

That's one of the strangest reasonings I've ever seen for paying the likes of Saviola that amount of money...you wonder how some of these people became so rich..
