CarraLegend Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 BERLIN, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler is retiring from football at the age of 27. Deisler, who missed last year's World Cup with the latest in a long series of injuries, announced the decision at a news conference held by Bayern on Tuesday. "I no longer have any real faith in my knee," the player said. "In the long run it's been an ordeal." Deisler was once widely seen as being the next great German player but fitness and psychological problems meant he was unable to fulfil his promise.
liverbird04 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Injury problemsDeisler has been dogged by problems since joining Bayern from Hertha BSC Berlin in 2002, especially persistent knee trouble and depression, and played 62 league games in four and a half seasons with the Bavarian club. He only returned to action in November after missing the summer's FIFA World Cup due to a serious cartilage complaint. He then picked up a thigh injury in training, ensuring a disappointing end to 2006. Bright startHe made his first and only UEFA Champions League appearance of the campaign in the 1-1 draw with FC Internazionale Milano on 5 December. In total, he played 21 times in the competition, scoring three goals. Deisler first came to prominence aged 19 at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach and big things were expected at Bayern where he did feature in the double success in 2004/05. However, his problems ultimately took their toll on a man whose first professional coach Friedel Rausch predicted would one day be "mentioned in the same breath as [Fritz] Walter, [uwe] Seeler and [Franz] Becken

Guest Cameron Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 He should go see Dr Steadman. No point throwing in the towel at that age. I think his decision to retire might have more to do with his psychological problems than his knee.
XXX Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 He should go see Dr Steadman.Again? Anyway, that has spoilt my day.
theredfella Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Awful news, the kid could have been a great player.
Benzo-13 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 He was really set to be something special.. Depression is an awful thing.
PhilM Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Who is Becken? Has been who sold his ass to the MLS for a quick buck or a million.
Koogan Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Can't help thinking that his depression is the real reason. I've seen people give up a career due to it.
Leo No.8 Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 F*ck Steadman, he should go and see Chris De Burgh...
Herbie von Smalls Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 F*ck Steadman, he should go and see Chris De Burgh...that was probably what induced his chronic depression.
