smithdown Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Don't see why it should, it's only worked half a dozen times in the history of the game so several times a week for us is rather optimistic.
Mike Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 never mind that. what about the free kick where we tap it sideways for the onrushing riise.
Stevie H Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 never mind that. what about the free kick where we tap it sideways for the onrushing riise.'the onrushing riise'. more sort of onambling isn't it?
Stanley Leisure Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 never mind that. what about the free kick where we tap it sideways for the onrushing riise. When was the last time that made it past the wall? The FA Cup Semi doesn't count, by the way.
Armin_Tamzarian Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Lets combine them. We should float the corner out to Alonso who can then pass it sideways for the onrushing Riise. Alternatively we could try to score instead.
johngibo YPC Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 When was the last time that made it past the wall? The FA Cup Semi doesn't count, by the way. well if we don't count the occasions that it worked then never!!
smithdown Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 If we ever score from the corner-volley-goalofthemonth routine, do you think we'll then respect the law of averages and not try again for a couple of decades?
psl Posted January 15, 2007 Author Posted January 15, 2007 If we ever score from the corner-volley-goalofthemonth routine, do you think we'll then respect the law of averages and not try again for a couple of decades? We'll probably up it to ten attempts a game.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 I'm shocked that Benitez puts up with it. It looks like the kind of flashy move that flashy players concoct. I liked the move that we did vs Leverkusen in the CL QF at Anfield. Baros put the ball down and then ran into the box and Garcia ran out to take the kick (but Baros had actually taken it by tipping the ball forward thus fooling the Leverkusen players) and took the ball and was in the box before Leverkusen realised what was going on. In fact it fooled the officials aswell so it had to be re-taken, but to go from such ingenious thinking to a 1-in-a-thousand kind of set piece is strange

Can't remember where though.
Buzz Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 One we tee'd up for Riise against Arsenal in the FA cup, saw Agger appear at the bottom of the screen and hung around the edge of the box, no-one in close to him, I was praying it was gonna go to him and when Carra had a word with the taker I thoguht this is it, but no, it went to Riise and got charged down.

I think we work on set pieces in training and that is one of our options. Rafa obviously likes to vary what we do at set pieces to keep the defence guessing.I can't imagine the players just decide amongst themselves to try this corner during the match

Which would suggest we score some stunning goals in training.

Whatever drilling a ball along the ground to a player, but lobbing it up for the volley makes it harder to execute. I thought Benitez would only vary to the extent that they are viable options we can score from.
Alonso Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 You'd think we'd score more than we do from corners what with the likes of Hyypia, Agger, Crouch, Kuyt etc but then the other teams probably man mark as opposed to using zonal marking!

It's the delivery - we have very poor corner takers really. I also think we over complicate our corners at times. I reckon Chelsea have shown how you can be very effective with what is really a very simple tactic - ie put the ball in dangerous areas at pace.

allez les rouges Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 what about the recent routine where we take a short corner, which ultimately leads to a back pass to our keeper, or a throw in? do we think that will ever work?

I reckon Chelsea have shown how you can be very effective with what is really a very simple tactic - ie put the ball in dangerous areas at pace.Exactly hit the area between the penalty spot and 6 yard line with a ball whipped in a pace and let the attackers attack the ball! Yes vary it every now and again to keep the defenders on their toes but get that delivery right and it can cuase all sorts of problems for the defence.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Basically I agree with jimmylibel and Steve H. I reckon we'd score more using one such tactic than using various different eloborate (& ineffective) routines.
downunder Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 If we ever score from the corner-volley-goalofthemonth routine, do you think we'll then respect the law of averages and not try again for a couple of decades? Sadly there is no real law of averages.

Yes vary it every now and again to keep the defenders on their toes but get that delivery right and it can cuase all sorts of problems for the defence. Is the correct way of doing it. I can't belive how utter, utter sh*t we are at corners. Will we EVER score from one?

jimmylibel Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Think we've scored in 3/4 games this season from corners. Blackburn homeBordeaux awayArsenal in the FA Cup. Any others?
