BOBBY CHARLTON - MAN UTD ARE THE PEOPLES CLUB

January 14 2007

Bobby Charlton sites Manchester United as the working class club that the people want to win the league (which will be surprising news to most Liverpool and Arsenal fans I imagine!).

Chelsea, he says, have too much Money and can buy more or less who we want and this alienates the working class man.

"It's very nice now because every time we play, people are saying 'good luck'. It's marvelous. I think it's just because the Chelsea approach is not suited to the working man. Roman Abramovich can just go and buy who he wants, that's probably why. That's the way I think people think it is. We couldn't compete with that sort of money. The general public is not that bothered about money, they just want us to win. But money does make it easier."

Hmmm?.so Bobby, are you saying that when all that money was pumped into breaking the British transfer records, Ferguson spent more money than any other club for so long (and during his first 7 years in charge didn?t win the league), the club was sold off and made a PLC to raise more cash for yet more British record signings and the club had the words ?Football Club? removed from their badge, that it is this that warms the ?working class man? to Manchester United?

Maybe it?s the Glazier?s purchase of what he called ?Manchester United ? an exciting franchise!? and immediately saddling them with over 500M of debt that makes the club so attractive to the working class man?

Still, maybe I?m wrong ? after all, Manchester United don?t have and never have had any glory hunting fans have they? I wonder what it could be then that he?s getting at then?

Fair enough Bobby, there was that romantic era after the Munich disaster, the ?Busby Babes? who 10 years later went on to win the European Cup, but be honest, since then, could you really say that all that money spent and your football club becoming a PLC and then into ?an exciting franchise? with 500M of debt, really captures the imagination of the working class man?

Let them fight amongst themselves. We all know the truth. :)

The Manc love-in on Fridays Radio 5 evening show had the journos suggesting that "everyone wanted Utd (sic!) to win it this year" - cue Geordies etc emailing in saying **** off.

We may hate Chelsea but the Mancs ****s are still the biggest ****ers of the lot. ;)

I would rather Chelsea win it than that shower because they will implode soon enough and will never be our true rivals. But until it's mathematically impossible we should be after it. I don't ever want anyone except Liverpool to win anything. Charlton is an ignorant ticket-touting beaut anyway.

And why are Geordies e-mailing about anything? Why is it an argument for them to get involved in? Isn't it 55 English Clubs that have won a domestic trophy since they last did?

watching your da come home from the mines everyday would teach you a thing or two id reckon.

Yes it did. It taught him that he thought he was above it from an early age. He shuns where he's from, which is a part of the reason Jackie fell out with him. Charlton's the worst sort of ladder-climber. Horrible, money-centred pr*ck.

so he decided at an early age he would never have to go down a mine and to ensure he could provide for his family. Every time ive heard him speak about his family and background its with pride, but still you make up what you have to there scot.

the main reason he fell out with jackie was his ma disapproved of his choice of wife, he chose to marry and relations soured.
