Guest Kev Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I know we've got a couple of players for the 'future', but is anyone concerned that no-one ready for the first team has been signed yet ? I've no doubt we'll get someone, but I can't help thinking that the deal(s) will happen in the final week of January. I just cannot figure out why if we sign a player at the end of January then why didn't we get him at the start ? It just seems weird to me and I cannot understand the wait.

Loads of deals go through near the end, maybe transfers arent as simple as "Hey, we want your player" "Oh, ok, have him" "Cheers, bye"? And maybe managers want the player for an extra few weeks before he goes? Who knows? Doesnt really matter as long as we get who we're after, we sign players for years not 2 weeks in January. Guest Scot Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I'm not sure that we need players right now. But if we do, then there's plenty of time yet.

We got Agger in the middle of January last season and Fowler right at the end. Are players bought at the end kind of like 'panic buys' or are contract talks that long ?
Sion Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 We got Agger in the middle of January last season and Fowler right at the end. Are players bought at the end kind of like 'panic buys' or are contract talks that long ? eye but we had the Kromkamp deal sorted out around xmas time the other year. It varies, and as CarraLeg says, is not exactly simple. Our two main targets are Neill and Mascherano if the Echo are to be believed Mascherano - There is the whole 3 clubs in a year thing to sort out Neill - B'burn want more than a player with 6 months of contract is worth these things take time

Are players bought at the end kind of like 'panic buys' or are contract talks that long ? Think it depends, like. In some cases the team we're buying from might only want to sell once they get something else lined up so there's a domino. Might also be that we chase one target, doesn't work, then we work on the #2 target etc...etc..
floyd the barber Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 our deals always seem to drag out.... didnt rafa say a month ago that he wanted to get players in as soon as possible.. anyway yeah im worried, pretty obvious the players we want....have slipped out of our valuation...ie..neill surely a left winger is gonna come in?.....maybe we are now holding the cash for that one position alone?
Michael Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 The selling clubs knows the buying club has a limited time to buy so they wait knowing the pressure will increase on the buying club as the days go by. The buying club baulks at paying X amount for the player it wants at the beginning of January, but as the end of the month approaches and the pressure increases it convinces itself that the player is worth that amount after all. All very silly and the only way to stop it is to make the transfer window last only two days. Day one to baulk at the price. Day two to meet it.
fyds Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 It's a small window mid season when the sort of players that you would want for your first team are rarely being let go or even in a position to go. You won't find many of the bigger clubs doing much business this time of year.
CarraLegend Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 our deals always seem to drag out.... Do they? Or are they normal just like every other clubs but you dont constantly look at their forums etc daily for info? The valuation stuff is also b******s, lets wait and see eh? f***ing hell.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Only thing we really need is a backup for rightback. Neill would have been ideal as he could also provide an option at leftback. What happened with that one?
Guest Scot Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Do they? Or are they normal just like every other clubs but you dont constantly look at their forums etc daily for info? A good point that One summer before internet I phoned the clubcall number every day as we were promised news of a big signing. Longest f*cking summer ever...

Longest f*cking summer ever... f*** knows how much I used to run up on the phone bill as a kid with those things. You'd see "£25m European superstar striker linked" then just have to ring.

We all know that deals are constructed outside the window, it just bugs me that nothing major has happened yet.

Cam Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Probably buy another couple of kids first, then Neill and Mascherano fairly late on. Fans aren't especially arsed about either one so there'll be a last-minute freebie or loan to try to pull the covers over our eyes and convince us we've done BIG business during the window. Possibly Raul. Or bringing back some has-been ex-Red.
RafaShanks Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 What Bascombe said on Friday: In a hectic few days, the Lucas Neill and Javier Mascherano sagas are close to a successful conclusion after a long chase. Should be tied up this week if what he said is correct.
Cam Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 That he'll sign or that he's any good? Or that he's cursed by an Argentinian gypsy family, sent over here for revenge over the Falklands and any club signing him will slump to the bottom before Pardew comes in and makes them even worse? We're doooooooooooomed.
Guest SpiritualWarrier Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 With the injuries to Mark and Luis, our targets will have changed or become a different priority. That may be a reason for the delay of signings.
