"You live or die by your mistakes - and the Anfield boss must accept blame for the mauling his side received."

Well, WTF did he do then Tommy? Is this guy the most annoying there is, maybe along with Ian "I hate foreign managers" St W*ank.

Stupid articles and stupid comments, and these guys are the so called experts!?!?!

Rafa has to take critisism and I was also angry last night, but sometimes I get the feeling that some of the ex-players are just bitter and takes any chance to shoot down the manager.

Or maybe it's me who is bitter? :(

He's one of them 'better in my day' types.

He sure is. I just don't get it, why is he given a space in a newspaper? He´s rubbish.

He's entitled to an opinion like the rest of us, he just gets paid for his.

You don't have to agree with him, but I know a lot of Reds who agree that Rafa should shoulder a lot of the blame for us getting knocked out of the CC.

Is that all he said? Pretty tame in fairness.

Tommy gave his knees for the cause!

In those days they didn't send them to clinics for cruciate ligament injuries, just gave it a wipe with the sponge and a spray with the painkiller and told them they would run it off. ;)

A few years back somebody (most likely a bluenose) wrote to his echo letters page saying that Liverpool should play some matches down south so that London based fans could see more games. Dear old Tom fell for it hook, line & sinker..... Seriously, he's an embarrassment

Why don't you find him one day and say it to his face. You may just end up pinned to a goalpost like Bob Latchford. :D Smithy is a legend and gave his all for the club. He was one of the men that helped build the great history we have. He is entitled to his opinion. Just don't read his column.

Yes, I think it is you who's bitter. Smith did it all and won it all for this club, HIS club and is entitled to an opinion. What have you done for the cause? You know the 18 and 5 you sing of? Well Smith played a MAJOR part in those numbers and you can like it or lump it.

Thats great pic, is that Billy Bonds on the receiving end?

No, he's clearly a Leeds player. The badge and the little pennant on the socks (Revie's idea that) gives it away. Is it Alan Clarke?

Tommy has acquired the reputation of having been some kind of assassin. Although his tackles were often vigorous, they were usually fair - i.e. he got the ball, although the man may also have hurtled into Row 3 of the stand. You can see in that excellent photo that he is actually going for the ball. However, what many people who didn't see him play don't realise, is that his passing and shooting were superb - at least as good as Souness or Steven Gerrard. So Tommy was a great all-round midfielder, not a thug. :)

In his day...er, they, and he, did pretty damn well. I don't really begrudge him a moan (or hundred).

He does tend to forget days such as when under Shanks we were knocked out of the FA Cup at a similar juncture by Watford who were in the old 3rd or 4th division at the time, and how from the mid sixties until the early 70's we won no silverware at all.

Like many older ex-players, his memory can be highly selective.

looks like peter barnes at city to me.

Think that's a Leeds kit Mike - maybe Asa Hartford?

it aint Peter Barnes - he was at Leeds after Smith had moved on to Swansea and retired.

Doesn't look like Clarke, didn't think Hartford ever played for Leeds (hole in the heart and all that)

looks like Tony Currie to me.

Like many fans?

Tommy Smith was far more skilful than many give him credit for, although I remember a number of times that one of our players had been fouled and was receiving treatment; while this was happening Tommy would go over to the player that had committed the foul and check his number. A few minutes later said player would be in a heap on the floor needing treatment himself. :D

I went to a lunch at which Tommy was a guest speaker. He told the following story about a game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest: Forest had a speedy winger called Ian Storey-Moore. At the start of the game, Storey-Moore pissed down the wing past Smithy a couple of times. At the first suitable opportunity, Smithy cornered the winger and said to him "If you piss past me one more time like that, I will f*ckin' burst you."

The ref was standing nearby. Storey-Moore turned to the ref and said "Did you hear what he just said, ref?"

"Yeah," said the ref. "If I were you, I would start cutting inside."

I can remember a video of Smithy when that sly s*** Alan Clarke was playing for Leeds. The Snide one was trying to be clever and play keep ball, next you see Tommy Smith come in and whack is legs from the back, Clark went down in a heap. Great stuff.

He had a great shot and as people said his passing was excellent. His view stend to be 'in my day' stuff but he deserves respect.

That's great
