fyds Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 As part of the repairs on my house after the water damage this summer, the builders have top replace a plaster and lath ceiling or two. They pulled the one down today that was in what's normally the office. As they were pulling it down in small lumps, they found concealed between the ceiling and the floorboards above two near perfectly preserved, one unopened, the other with two missing, packets of 'Ogden's Tabs' - packs of ten fliterless ciggies from as near as I could tell using t'web, 1895-1901 judging from the 'Famous and revered English Cricketers' card inside the open one. They were made at Ogden's factory on St James' Street, Liverpool. I can only assume, hidden beneath the floor boards they belonged to a child or a young woman who wished their habit kept secret...wonder why they never actually smoked more than two? Nice bit of social history.
