Fantastic news that Michael Shields is coming back to the UK. I know that several folks here are close members of family or have been active supporters of his case.

To this end perhaps we could put all of our welcome home messages here (and I know that there's a forum for Michael but this deserves the same profile as the original campaign if only so folk can see that their support can make a difference) and send them on to him. If even just to make him realise how much his family and the community have worked to get things just this far, and to let him know he has your continued support.

This isn't here to judge the ifs and buts of his case, if you want to do that f*** off to the relevant part of the forum, familiarise yourself with the content there, and make a comment in that thread.

as for myself..

Welcome home lad. Justice will be done. You have an unbelievable family and you will still not walk alone.

here f***ing here, 1 small step to justice, 1 half of the jigsaw imo. The other half is yet to have good knews too Spike, still people say a prayer for you like they did this young boy.

as for the welcome home? Keep strong lad, This has been one major step from before and i'm sure there will be more. But what news this must mean to yourself and family, i can only imagine. YNWA Lad!

To be honest and from experience the European court of human rights and fair trials abroad is where it's at moreso than depending on the foreign office who only do summat when there's enough voices shouting for the case which may effect the other countries and their goodwill.

does he have a chance of making appeals through the Uk and EU courts now he's home or does he still have to serve his full sentence?

R5 had his lawyer on the station yesterday and his appeal is already going through the eu courts and has been for some time. Although he mentioned that it will take a long time :( but the agreement has been made that his sentence is to be fullfilled in this country.

Unless he is found not guilty through appeal process, he will serve the term :(

 not good. but at least he's closer to his family, so the burden on them is less. surely this case can't stand up in a EU court??

surley it can if they failed to takeinto consideration some of the new evidence the defence wanted to provide? I'm sure i read somewhere that his re-trial was s*** and very un-fair. If thats true, then it can stand up in the eu court for human rights.

There was talk yesterday in the media that he was going to be held in Wandsworth Prison for two months for assessment but he's been moved straight to Hindley Prison in Wigan, which is obviously much better for his family and Michael.
