Mark Gonzalez today admitted he needs more time to adapt to the physical demands of life in the Premiership.

The Chilean winger, who made only his seventh league appearances for the Reds on Saturday, believes the Liverpool fans are yet to see the best of him following his eagerly anticipated summer arrival.

 

"I need to settle more to English football. I knew it would be difficult and it's going to take me more time to get used to it," he said.

 

"I know I must do more, but I'm confident I will. I know sometimes people don't understand that you can make mistakes in a game and things don't always look perfect immediately, but I'll keep on working.

 

"I know in football it's not normal for people to be patient, but we all understand that will be the case until we do our best on the pitch and win more games.

 

"I just have to keep working hard to get myself fitter. It's a demanding league and it's not the same working on physical training as playing in games.

 

"The best way to adjust is always to play as much as possible, and at the moment I'm doing that."

 

Gonzalez was as frustrated as anyone following the frustrating goalless draw at Middlesbrough but he's optimistic that we'll soon see an upturn in the team's fortunes.

 

"There are a lot of new players to the squad, and it's normal for it to take time," he added.

 

"We're working every day to learn each other's game and then show it on the pitch.

 

"At the moment it's not happening, but hopefully it's not going to take long to gel using a system with the two wingers."

A lot of people on here seem to have written him off already. He came accross as being very down to earth in his interviews after signing and this is another. Lets give the lad a break and get behind him when he is out on the pitch. He is going to cause full backs some serious problems when he settles in, and with a little hard work i am sure he will.

I think he's been reading a lot about the pace of the English game and is just rushing things a bit too much. Last season in La Liga he looked a lot more comfortable in posession and was beating players for fun, so we know the abilty is there.

Rafa is not one to lavish praise on players for nothing but really praised this guy so there must be something we have not yet seen. It will take a foreign winger with a far from big physique time to adapt.

I think it could be down to him trying to rush things. Besides if speed is his game, low balls into the box are the way forward. He may not necessarily need to get balls onto Crouch or Kuyts head, we have pennant to do that.

He's not played much to make a proper judgement imo. He's looked good in parts and looked raw at times too.

Of course it going to take time, he's a young player in a new league who's had a few niggly injuries, look at Shevchenko the best striker in the world has hardly set the world alight while at Chelsea.

 

In addition, the team on Sat had 5 new arrivals from when we played them last at the Riverside - Kuyt, Bellamy, Pennatt, Agger and Gonzalez. People need to start supporting them as opposed to always laying into them, it's a different philospohy this season to last with a alot of new players.

Yes. It was his cross. Very good!

 

 

I don't think Gonzalez has been that bad as you all say. What about Pennant then? He has been s****. He is supposed to know English footy very well but how often does he get behind his man and get the cross in. Not very often.
