Done deal. Sold this morning for £85m plus the £22m debt

Seeing as the old chairman managed to ovesee a regime that sold some really talented footballers (and Lampard), I am sort of pleased

According to Mihir Bose, West Ham have embarrassed us by securing this deal in three months while it's taken us two years and we still haven't got any deal.

You say that, R4 sports correspondent was saying before 9am that Hammers fans don't want to win the prem, just go back to the old days of being a club that plays good, attractive attacking football, maybe win a cup ((he mentioned FA/ECWC, World Cup...), with a few home grown players who play with passion for their club. "an example that fans of the magic circle clubs of Chelsea, Manchester utd, Arsenal and Liverpool would do well to follow"

Which is of course nonsense. West Ham fans I know, like those of any other club, would very much like to be as successful as possible. There's a difference between being realistic enough to know its nigh on imposssible for a club their size to challenge for the title and not actually wanting it.

West Ham are fastly becoming the ugliest club in the league. With that fella and Tevez its enough to give anyone nightmares.

Is correct. This cvnt should stick to discussing about the olympics, because he knows f*** all about footy. And isn't he going to become BBC sport/Radio5 news sports editor? That should be fun

West Ham may struggle to reach the heights of Liverpool on the field but off it they have easily beaten the five-times European champions. Their takeover took a mere three months, Liverpool have been at it for two years.

The Liverpool takeover mirrors the West Ham one in that there are two bidders, one from the Middle East, one from America. As revealed by The Daily Telegraph two weeks ago, chairman David Moores and chief executive Rick Parry missed the Carling Cup match against Birmingham City to fly to Montreal to meet George Gillett, the owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team.

Gillett told them he is willing to fund a total package of around £450 million. The question is how much of this will go into the pockets of the existing shareholders, led by Moores, who is believed to value the club's shares at £200m.

This would leave just £250m ? £200m for the new stadium and £50m for new players, other costs and debts.

advertisementGillett would like to reduce the money the shareholders receive so that more can go into the club.

Another sticking point is control. Gillett will want the club lock, stock and barrel while the existing management may want an investor who allows them to remain.

That sort of deal looks more likely with the rival bidder, Samir Ansari, the head of Dubai International Capital, part of Dubai Holdings. Ansari is a fervent Liverpool fan.

Parry was in Dubai a couple of weeks ago and although the word was he was there with his family over half-term I understand he met Ansari and prefers the Ansari bid.

There is one other similarity between the two takeovers. West Ham began to look for a buyer in the hope he would have deep enough pockets to help them buy the 2012 Olympic stadium.

Liverpool began to look for a buyer because they need £200m to build their stadium at Stanley Park. And the clock is ticking. They have told the council they will start work in the new year.
