Rafael Benitez believes Harry Kewell has the mental strength to resurrect his Anfield career in the New Year.

The Australian international is currently recovering from his latest injury setback and hasn't played for the Reds since last season's FA Cup final.

Despite still facing many weeks on the sidelines, Benitez is adamant his 28 year old midfielder still has a future at Anfield.

He said: "Harry still has a future here and I'm positive he can come back. He is now working with the physios but he will need at least two months before he can start training with the team again.

"He is okay mentally. He knew he had an injury problem, but now he is mentally in a right way.

"He had two or three things wrong with him, but it was his toe which was causing the major problem. We think the injury has been sorted, so when he returns to training it will just be a question of getting him match fit.

"If we have Harry Kewell and Momo Sissoko coming back in January, then it will be like signing two new players."

Offal.

Kewell has had an absolute nightmare since siging for us, perhaps once he gets back fit he might get the slice of good luck he deserves. Personally, I cant see how anyone can deny a fully Kewell would add significantly to our squad and first 11.

If he comes back as good as he was before the injury, I think he would be the perfect player to play off Kuyt.

More needed on the left as it looks right now though.

before he comes back the physio's need to make sure he is absolutely 100%.. everytime he's been out he's always seemed to have come back with still a little niggle here or there.. make sure he's 100% - get him a few reserve team games under his belt and then pop him back into the first team squad.. it's not worth taking any chances cos, before this last injury, he looked to be getting back to his best..

By the time he comes back we'll have played 210 games since he signed, he's appeared in 120 of them. Thats 90 games he's missed through injury.

He'll never be fully fit from 3 and a half years of watching him for pool

Haahaa that's what I thought. I remember GH saying the same thing about returning injured players. I was at the edge of my seat so I was...

I dont give a f*** what people say, Harry is a big reason we have been inconsistant this year.

Yep, now we have another of last years midfield out for months aswell. We might have a big squad but having first teamers out still hurts us just like it would anyone else.

we haven't been inconsistent, that would suggest there's no pattern.

We've been decent at home against mostly average opposition and poor away against the teams in the top 6 or 7.

I agree we've missed Kewell a lot but its daft to plan on having a fit Harry Kewell anyway. The last 4 years of his career have shown that his fitness is unreliable. Kewell would have made a big difference in a few of those games. Thats for sure but that should have been offset slightly by the fact that we now have the right winger we've needed for years and 2 new strikers.

There's no getting away from the fact we've underperformed.

I agree, even when he's injured he has us playing badly. Idiot.

Not you. Kewell.

The loss of Cisse and Kewell is a big reason to why our away form is so poor, whether people will admit it or not those two were big players for our team last year especially away from home where Kewells ball retention was excellent.

All the talk and confidence in the summer of Speedy comming in and taking Kewells place easily has been misplaced, Speedy looks like a frighten kid everytime he plays.

We need Kewell back A.S.A.P

Saw quite a few suggest Gonzalez would push Kewell out of the team as soon as he arrived after he performed so well in Spain, but I always said Kewell would remain first choice and had it not been for his injury that clearly would have been the case. We have really missed Harry, he provided width, balance and attacking threat from the left last season.

I think one of the biggest losers out of Kewell's injury is Gonzalez - he wouldn't have played against Arsenal or United had Harry been fit, which means he wouldn't have taken the knocks to his confidence in looking somewhat out of his depth and being crooked. The ideal situation would have been Kewell being first choice with Gonzalez thrown on in the second half when legs were tiring and preferred for some of the easier home games when Kewell needed a rest.

That way he'd have been gradually eased in and able to build up his confidence. As it is he's had a bit of a baptism of fire - people need to get behind him as a young, promising Liverpool player who is at a crucial stage of his developing career and needs our support.

yes I was one of those to think that Gonz would push Kewell out. Now I can't believe I'm looking forward to him coming back.

Kewell is a very good player, one of the best in the squad and has shown it on many occasions. Gonzalez is nowhere near his level yet and I haven't seen too much from him yet to suggest he will get near it.
