anfieldgaz Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Why does Rafa insist on playing Gerrard out of the centre? I'm not blaming it for today's result as I think the negative tactics caused that...... But why can one of the worlds best if not the worlds best Centre Midfielder be constantly played out of position regardless of the circumstances. Gerrard is now behind Alonso, Momo and Zenden for the CM spot and to me he is the best CM player we've got if not the best in Europe, so why does Rafa insist on not playing him in the centre regardless of cirumstances! As much as I hate to say it, it reminds of the GH days of "I've made a decision and I'll stick to that decision no matter what". Let's get one of the WORLDS best CM's back in the centre and build the team around him before it's too late for him and us!!!!
Spion kop Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 because all our right wingers are s**** lackluster journeymen.
McBain Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 He's been poor in every position he's played this season. Including cm
Gomez Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 This has actually been the first time there has been a valid argument. When you have two world class players in the centre in Xabi and Momo, and Gerrard is so good he can play anywhere you can't argue, though the sh*thouse hacks like to stir. However, today, there was no such good reason and I can help but feel Rafa did it out of stubborness, because so many people have been saying Gerrard should play there. Zenden is not good enough to play centre mid for us in anything but the most simple games, it cost us today.
anfieldgaz Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 because all our right wingers are s**** lackluster journeymen. I don't care..... you play your best player in his best position and our best player is Steven Gerrard and his best position is CM. The amount of times he had to come inside today to try and get involved in the game because he wasn't getting the ball was unbelievable!!!! Would Wenger honestly start a game with Henry on the left wing??? No he wouldn't because Henry is their best player and his best position is up-front so you play him there!! If all our right wingers are journeymen why did we pay £6.8m for a journeyman then?
chrisbonnie Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 well i personally think as far as centre midfielders go, alonso is far better than Gerrard, sure Gerrard scores goals, but he hasnt tracked back in donkies years now, so that takes the biggest part, of what i belive a cnetre midfield has to do away from him but theres no way that dutch imposter is better than Gerrard, that long haired eejit doesnt deserve his wages, he can tackle every now and then, but his passing is pub team standard

Bootle Buck Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 It doesn't matter were he plays. We play with no urgency or confidence to go at teams. He would end up sitting in front of the slowest back line in football to protect them.
anfieldgaz Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 He's been poor in every position he's played this season. Including cm He's played CM twice from the start and in both games we won!! but regardless of that would you play Ronaldinho @ LB? No you wouldn't because you play your best player in his best position! I can half-stomach playing Gerrard out wide when Momo and Xabi are in the middle but if anyone on here can honestly say that Zenden is a better Centre Midfielder than Gerrard I really will stop posting on here!
Maldini Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Negative tactics my boll*cks. He played there for the last 30 mins and was even worse there than he had been on the right.
Chili Palmer Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 (edited) Lets dismiss this myth, Gerrard is not one of the best Central Midfielders in the world, he had the potential to be a few seasons ago, and he COULD be in the future but at the minute he has lost the discapline and attitude to play in the middle without serious cover behind him, remember how Milan tore Xabi and Stevie apart in Istanbul? I have this feeling that Rafa hasn't forgot. Edited November 12, 2006 by Kieran
Ian Mc Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 None of them looked interested anyway so does it matter? we pass it sideways brilliant tho ... absolute shambles, when you think of Liverpool sides gone by who fought like lions for the club during games and now we are served up these spineless perfomances.

The Ronaldinho that playsevery game Left Mid you mean? And Gerrard may have only started that amount in cm, i couldn't say. But he's played there in plenty of others. Like today Edited November 12, 2006 by Mcbain
Maldini Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 He's played CM twice from the start and in both games we won!! but regardless of that would you play Ronaldinho @ LB? What a stupid f***ing argument. 1. We're not playing Gerrard at LB2. Ronaldinho plays out of position for Barcelona, his best postion is behind a front two and he plays out left for them.
Lee W Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 He played there for the last 30 mins and was even worse there than he had been on the right. Don't agree with that at all, he was almost immediately more involved in the game pinging passes around and nearly scored twice. Is it the new black to bolluck Gerrard everytime things go wrong ? There were plenty out there today who were worse than the captain.
anfieldgaz Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Lets dismiss this myth, Gerrard is not one of the best Central Midfielders in the world, he had the potential to be a few seasons ago, and he COULD be in the future but at the minute he has lost the discapline and attitude to play in the middle without serious cover behind him, remember how Milan tore Xabi and Stevie apart in Istanbul? I have this feeling that Rafa hasn't forgot. Please name me 10 or even 5 better midfielders better than Gerrard!!!! So if he's not that good I'm sure you'd be willing to sell him and keep Zenden in the middle.... get a grip FFS!!! Steven Gerrard is one of the best players in the world and if you offered all the managers in World football to sign 1 player every single one of them would pick Steven Gerrard!!!!!!!!! Gerrard has hardly played in the middle for over 6 months, so when we are 2-0 down and losing a game he's meant to go in the middle and make everything great for us after playing so long on the right!!!!!

Gomez Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 spot on. it is time to question this kind of selection. we had too many lightweights in a game that was so important for us. 2 players who added nothing in Zenden and Gonzalez and a third, Gerrard, who did very little. I have found myself, for the first time, questioning Rafa today. I know in the cold (sober) light of day I think he is the best manager we have had since Paisley, and I know we are lucky to have him and there is no one better. But I just didn't get the selection of Zenden today, and it is not just in hindsight, I didn't get it at 3:15 when I first saw it. You can argue about Speedy, Pennant, Riise / Warnock, Hyypia / Agger but I can see both sides of those arguments, Zenden's inclusion, certainly his inclusion in centre mid, I just can't see. You do it to rest Gerrard or Xabi against Brum in the fizzy cup, or dead rubbers in Europe, or even, pushing it, at home to crap teams in the league. But not away to arsenal.
DJM Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 (edited) Negative tactics my boll*cks. He played there for the last 30 mins and was even worse there than he had been on the right. Exactly. F*** me we were pish but some people are talking shyte. Gerrard HAS to play out there because we have no options on the right at all Edited November 12, 2006 by DJM
anfieldgaz Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 The Ronaldinho that playsevery game Left Mid you mean? And Gerrard may have only started that amount in cm, i couldn't say. But he's played there in plenty of others. Like today I said LB not LM!!! Ronaldinho plays in a team that plays flowing, passing football and he joins the attack at every opportunity. In our team Gerrard on the right is totally wasted!! We play long ball football away from home most of the time and Gerrard on the right hardly touches it at least in the middle he bosses games!!! So Mcbain answer me 1 question and 1 question only....... Is Bolo Zenden a better CM player than Steven Gerrard!!!!!!

windy city red Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 this frigging argument is getting tiresome. it doesnt matter what position he plays, if he played like what he did today in CM, it wouldnt have made a difference.
Gomez Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Negative tactics my boll*cks. He played there for the last 30 mins and was even worse there than he had been on the right. Disagree, we were better when he moved over, though it was a different game by then. They had 9 men behind the ball and understandably where picking us off on the break.
Billy Dane Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 at the beginning of the second half Steve appeared to be playing on the left hand side of the centre of midfield, with no one on the right. Tactical or just in-discipline?
