Grimes Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I was wondering if anyone had any insight on where/how to buy tickets for Real Sociedad home games in San Sebastian. My Spanish is not good so I had no joy on their site and when I google I just get page after page of tout sites. Given the dreadful season they are having I presume you should be able to pick up tickets on general sale with the probable exception of Barca or Real Madrid at home. Any other general info into doing the tourist thing in San Sebastian would be welcome too
Coyler Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Any other general info into doing the tourist thing in San Sebastian would be welcome too Buy a t-shirt with a small Basque flag on it and hang around the bars in the old part of the city getting pissed . And eating fish.

heighway Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I was in Valencia a few years back and decided to try and catch a game at the Mestalla. This was the year they lost to Real Madrid in the CL final and I was there a week or so before that match. I was able to get a ticket at the ground on the afternoon of the match no problem. I'd imagine you'd be able to do likewise at Sociedad, especially -like you say- as they're doing so poorly in the league just now.

Sociedad V Gettafe . Its not exactly El Classico, so I started wondering if tickets were hard to come by in general.
Figaro Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Go to the ground the morning of the day before the match.
John am Rhein Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 How far IS Sociedad from San Sebastian. What would a cab cost?
Grimes Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 I think it's the far side of Donostia.I was told to avoid that place, its full of Basques apparently. Go to the ground the morning of the day before the match. Cheers, thanks for the info

John am Rhein Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 'Royal Society' doesn't seem a very Basque-friendly name. Does this club have a local affinity like Alaves/FC Barcelona or is it more like Espanol, etc.?
Coyler Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 The local Basques love their Sociedad every bit as much. The Spanish name has perturbed me for a while, though. They changed it to FC Donostia ages ago for a while I think. Don't know why they changed it back. Ah right. They got the name after the King went on his holliers there. Changed it to Donostia for most of the '30s and reverted back to the Franco-friendly name after the Civil War. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Sociedad
John am Rhein Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Am I right in saying that 'Atletico Bilbao' changed their name back to 'Atheltic Bilbao' (or Bilbo?) soon after the Franco popped his cloggs?

Yes indeedy. Another quick gawk at wikipedia reveals that "In 1941 the club changed its name to Atlético Bilbao, following a decree issued by Franco, banning the use of non-Spanish language names." After he died they switched back
