Sporting events you just don't understand

The Davis Cup - wtf is it all about? I know its tennis obviously and I've grasped enough over the years to realise Britain are bloody rubbish in it. But it just seems to be endless ties to no apparent end. Is there actually any final to it? Does anybody win the actual cup? Does aybody know, or indeed care?
