Mourinho rages against ref

Jose Mourinho has called for referees to be held more accountable for their actions, after a string of curious decisions by Graham Poll in Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Aaron Lennon and Michael Dawson scored for Spurs as they recorded their first win against The Blues in 32 league meetings.

Claude Makelele had given Mourinho's side the lead on 15 minutes, but a spirited fightback from the North Londoners dented the champions' title ambitions, and Mourinho was less than impressed with the official's display.

"I just feel sorry for my players and my supporters but at the same time I can say to Tottenham people to carry on their celebrations because this is a big moment for them and they have to enjoy their moment," Mourinho told Sky Sports 1.

"We didn't deserve this result because for long periods of the game we were the best team. But Tottenham fought a lot, they fought with their hearts to try to have a special day and they got it so I have to congratulate them.

"But in such an emotional game of football with good quality I don't understand why Mr Poll wants to be part of the show.

"The show is Chelsea players and Tottenham players, they gave a great game of football, I don't know why Mr Poll wanted to be such an important person in the game."

There were a number of curious decisions by the official, including a harsh dismissal for two yellow cards for club captain John Terry.

But Mourinho was also disappointed with Hossam Ghaly's clear elbow on Michael Essien and Didier Drogba's goal which was ruled out just moments after Chelsea's opener.

"The disallowed goal for Drogba, only he can explain, it's 2-0 in the moment where Chelsea were playing great football," Mourinho continued.

"And to show a red card to a player for contact in the box when he was the attacking one I felt is also a bit ridiculous.

"The yellow card to Ghaly is a clear red because he elbowed Essien, so every decision was against us."

The Portuguese tactician also suggested a novel approach for the future, as to how the officials should conduct themselves.

"I think instead of managers complaining and speaking against the referee's decision I think they should come for an interview," he added.

"Instead of managers criticising decisions because it looks like I lost the game so I complain about the referee, I think you should come and you should show the images to ask them the reason why the goal was disallowed, the reason why John Terry saw a second yellow card, the reason why Ghaly only saw a yellow card. They have to explain their decisions.

"It's very easy to be a referee and after go home and not have to show their faces and they don't have to give explanations.

"I lose a game and five minutes after I have to be here to give an interview.

"But I prefer to explain it in the easiest way. Tottenham scored two goals, we scored one and congratulations to them. Wednesday is another day and another game."

Next up for The Blues is the visit of Martin O' Neill's resurgent Aston Villa side in the Carling Cup, and Mourinho will be anxious to see a response from his team.

One of these days, he will hold his hands up and say we were beaten by the better team.

I dislike Jose, very close to hating him - but not yet.

However I do agree with him regarding referees explaining some of the decisions they give during the game. But they must do it through the match assessor.

I agree with what you say as well. I despise Mourinho, he is ruining the game by acting bigger than the game and the media lap it up and give him the soapbox he craves.

His post match comments are given the highlights and he takes the attention away from the players. I would like to see the referees have to give post match interviews as well as the managers, within a few minutes of the final whistle.

Let's make use of the 4th official and have him pass on info re yellow/red cards to the TV people after he chats to the ref on his microphone. That might put a stop to some of the ridiculous speculation we get from the commentators.

Another problem is that commentators and media punters alike don't know the laws of the game.

Rafa & Martin Jol are in a class of their own with post match interviews, but this is not what the media want. They want the Ferguson rant or the Wenger rant or the Mourinho rant.

There should be a 30 minute cooling off period after games where managers do not talk to the media or to the referee. Then after 30 minutes the referee should have a 5 minute briefing with each manager separately. Only then should managers be allowed talk to the media. But I guess that would lessen the "circus" element of the game which the media crave.

he's such a t**. It was Poll, what's he expect? Normal refereeing?

And as for the delusions of Chelsea grandeur - 'a big moment for them'. Jose - sometimes the better team loses, as Liverpool did at Stamford Bridge

It's a bit rich of him to criticise someone else for "wanting to become an important person in the game when it's only the show of the players of both sides"

And also predictable that he said the best team lost

Did you notice his fake grin and exaggerated applause when Makelele scored ?

That grin :bryanrobson:

I've gone off Jol a bit. He seems to be too specific in his blame/explanation: naming names for missing chances bugs me.

I don't understand what Mourinho meant by "And to show a red card to a player for contact in the box when he was the attacking one I felt is also a bit ridiculous. "

Is he suggesting that an attacking player can't be guilty of fouling a defender ?

I particularly liked the bit where Chelsea players were surrounding the referee to complain and the Spurs fans could be heard clearly chanting "Thats why you're w*****s! That's why you're w*****s"

I feel for the refs. Watching on tv and watching 10 replays and telling th ref he got it wrong is tough. especially when the players are appealing whether they should or not.

we definitely need 4 linesmen per game now. We also need a 4th ref watching on TV to see any shirt pulling/off the ball stuff, so that he can still punish the player. Not intereupt play, but at the next break, issue a booking/sending off.

just watched the 'EPL review show' - now, I don't know whether Poll has explained the red card, but (as per the other thread) it did seem to go off in excess to any percieved shirt-lifting ;) by Terry.

If it was racialist, he has to go - straight red - but I get the feeling that there was more to it than the tussle
