Guest Ant Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 The most consistant performer along with Carra Clinical Veristile Fast Tough How can anyone over look such a consistant and excellent performer, We only have a steve finnan thread on the odd occasion but I just want to vent my feelings about one of the biggest un-sung heros at this club. I don't know what it is but we seem to over look him every game as a key performer... Let us not forget he played his part in Istanbul and Cardiff which to me makes me wonder how people cannot praise him for his level of dignified service to the club. Steve Finnan you are ace!!!
Guest anfieldanfield Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 If anything he's 'too solid'. I know that may sound ridiculous, but sometimes I've found myself screaming for the lad to show a bit more confidence and bomb down the right flank, overlapping our right winger, especially at Anfield against lesser sides when we can afford to show a little more ambition. But no, Finnan just puts his foot on the ball, and passes it backwards or sideways or else crosses from far, far too deep. I dont want to sound too harsh though, and generally speaking, yes, he's a top, top full back and a great servant for the club.
Nebraska Red Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 he always seems to do just what is needed at the right time. all teams need to have a player or 2 like Finnan. he rarely screws things up and he rarely does anything flashy. when he does something good , like the cross to Kuyt against Galatassaray, his part goes unmentioned. we remember the finish and the ball to Finnan by Alonso. i'd call him solid and effective.

Kite Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Think he is without doubt one of our best players now and always astonishes me how some "fans" attempt to dismiss his consistency as being a sign of "average-ness" (or, alternatively, attempt to portray him as a player that never ventures forward - one would think they have hardly ever actually watched one of our matches actually being played!)
Nebraska Red Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Another unsung hero just like Emile your undying support for heskey is going to have people talking. is this some kind of man crush? heskey's role was clear for most of his time at Anfield. Official Scapegoat and to be blamed for every loss, every goal conceded and every opportunity missed. Even if he was not playing.
Gunga Din Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 i think Rafa will replace Finnan in the summer.
Christine Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Steady Eddy, no more no less, boring in his predictability yet consistent (apart from when he first joined) with good solid performances.
hideNseek Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Steady Eddy, no more no less, boring in his predictability yet consistent (apart from when he first joined) with good solid performances. Agree
meepins Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 I think he gets a good mention on here, as he should. It could be that he rarely takes his man on when I know he is capable of doing it and delivering a good cross with either foot.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 i think Rafa will replace Finnan in the summer. Not sure. A few goals would't go amiss - didn't Babbel get 6 in 2001? That's always a big bonus from a FB. Apart from that, there's little to criticise, he's even very good with his left-peg

Guz Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 (edited) It takes some f***ing skill and a half to be a right back with your right 'winger' drifting all over the pitch. If I remember correctly, he played a lot further up the field when he first came and formed a decent looking partnership with Diouf.l I wonder how exposed Sami and Carra would be if he attacked as often as Riise does. He and Inbred #1 have been the best right backs in the country for several years now, and by some distance, even before Steve left Fulham. Best crosser in the team as well I think. Guest Scot Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I really like Finnan. Wouldn't swap him for anyone.
Zoob Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Best crosser in the team as well I think. I agree with that. More than any other player, he consistently puts good, dangerous crosses in, and these can be with his left foot or his right.
Cooldude Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Would not swap him for anyone and Rafa would be crazy to replace him
Stevie H Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 i think Rafa will replace Finnan in the summer.i have a feeling he might too.
sean Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I think he's exactly what a good right back should be. Very dependable, technically sound and is not found wanting in any department of his game. With the way Gerrard wants to play the right mid role it'simpossible for him to get forward more than he does, the whole right side would be exposed. I also agree with Wayne, I think Rafa might move him out, he'll get a good price and a ore European style right back will come in.
Maldini Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 i think Rafa will replace Finnan in the summer.I don't think he'll replace him, but he'll bring in a competitor
Andy-oh-six Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 He is a consistent performer who also chips in with assists. From memory he has had a few assists this season so far: Crouch v VillaCrouch v GalaKuyt v Newcastle Rafa will defo bring in someone to challenge his place next season. He has done he last couple of seasons but Finnan has seen them off.
Leo No.8 Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Criticism of his attacking play baffles me; it's simply untrue as he gets as many assists as any full-back in the Premier League. Possibly in the top European leagues although I'm just guessing on that front. Perhaps if he f*cked up a bit more defensively and got caught out of position a few times, people would start calling him an attacking right-back...

He doesn't have the confidence that if he overlaps Pennant there will provide cover for him. With Gerrard he seems much more comfortable to go further forward knowing that the team wont get caught out of shape.I also think this is why Pennant looks ineffective at times; he is often up against two players because they don't have to worry about the full back.

He had a very good season last season - but the first several games this season I thought he's been pretty poor. The last couple of games though he seems to have recovered his form - so if he can keep that up then I'll be very happy.
Cunny Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I think he's an effective performer but I don't rate him as highly as most on this forum.I think it will be one of the positions Benitez will be looking to strengthen next summer, if not January.
