Guest red john Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 I need to settle an argument. Who was Liverpool's first £1million player? I say it was Peter Beardsley.
Cobs Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 i'd say that was right think Paisley's most expensive signing was Lawro for £900kdunno bout Fagan Barnes was also £900k and Rushie came back after Beardsley had signed
smithdown Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Should've been Michael Laudrup - that deal was going to be £1.5m iirc.
anny road Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Should've been Michael Laudrup - that deal was going to be £1.5m iirc. yes what a signing that woud have been
Falconhoof Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Beardsley was 1.7 or 1.9 million wasn't he ? definately the first and worth every penny.
Tones Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Yeah think he was 1.9 and was a british record at the time?? Worth every penny for sure.
johngibo YPC Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 yes what a signing that woud have been would it have been at the expense of someone else though??And what happend to the transfer?
jimmylibel Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 would it have been at the expense of someone else though??And what happend to the transfer? Wasn't there a disagreement over contract length or something?
allez les rouges Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 deffo beardsly. i thought 1.8. barnes was signed before from memory, for 900k
nrkintheuk Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Wasn't there a disagreement over contract length or something? Yeah think we were insisting on 5 years
smithdown Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 would it have been at the expense of someone else though??And what happend to the transfer? He could have come in for the likes of Fatty Robbo or Hodgson at that stage I think, Kenny was playing midfield/forward at the time...83/4ish? Think it was down to his arl fella who wanted a five year contract and we wouldn't offer more than four.
Bigal Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 i'd say that was rightthink Paisley's most expensive signing was Lawro for £900kdunno bout Fagan Barnes was also £900k and Rushie came back after Beardsley had signed Me dad rang from work asking if we had signed Beardsley and sutty said "no we've signed John Barnes" dad "what the hell do we want him for?" Me dad knows lots about footie

Poolfrog Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Should've been Michael Laudrup - that deal was going to be £1.5m iirc.At the time I recall allegations of Juventus officials turning up at his house with a bag containing $100K US in cash (a lot of money then) to persuade him to sign, when we had been favourites and were doing everything by the book.
FMac Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 At the time I recall allegations of Juventus officials turning up at his house with a bag containing $100K US in cash (a lot of money then) to persuade him to sign, when we had been favourites and were doing everything by the book. He said last night on Sly Sports, that there was an agreement for 3 years. Liverpool then wanted to increase it to 4. He and advisors refused "An agreement is an agreement", and went to Juve.
Bigal Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 that Ian Rush wont score while I've got a hole in my a*** Thats the greatest
johngibo YPC Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 He could have come in for the likes of Fatty Robbo or Hodgson at that stage I think, Kenny was playing midfield/forward at the time...83/4ish? Think it was down to his arl fella who wanted a five year contract and we wouldn't offer more than four. i didn't mean replace in the side. i meant replace as a transfer target. Like if we went out and bought Paul Walsh instead then it is more than annoying. I never knew we were this close to getting him. Although there were strong Brian Laudrup rumours at one point were there not? Were in my school anyway
FanaticDane Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Should've been Michael Laudrup - that deal was going to be £1.5m iirc.yes what a signing that would be. He was one of the best. In 91/92 he participated in 62% of Barça's goals.
hideNseek Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Frank Worthington was the one that really got away.
Will Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 thought it was ronnie rosenthalHe was the 3rd - Beardsley, Rush from Juve, then Ronnie
floyd Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Frank Worthington was the one that really got away. And there's me thinking it was Derek Statham
meredithmathieson Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 When we signed Mark Lawrenson, it was for £930,000, but as a separate (but linked) part of the deal Jimmy Case went to Brighton. As I recall, Case was ludicrously undervalued (£300k?), because Bob Paisley had said that he would never pay £1 million+ for a player.
