Herbie von Smalls Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 got the boxset of the final series and finished watching it over the weekend. was so hooked that i stayed up all night saturday and saw something like eight episodes back-to-back. i never managed to get hooked by the sopranos, west wing, lost and the rest of that wave of american series, but six feet under really nailed television drama. the writing, directing, photography and especially the acting have been consistently excellent. thematically it tackles a lot of thought-provoking aspects of both life and death, and when tackling moral (and occasionally political) issues, it has mastered the art of presenting different sides of the argument and leaving the viewer to make up their mind. the balance between light and dark issues was perfect, given that it centred around death that's some achievement. the last few episodes were such a fitting close, and the finale bowed out leaving me wanting for more, but knowing that they'd tied up every (major) character's story. a bittersweet ending, that highlighted the wretchedness of grief for the past, but the joy of hope for the future. this show raised the bar for tv drama and i suspect it'll be prime material in unversity media/drama courses 50 years hence.
