On-loan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has joined Wigan from Liverpool on a permanent basis, it was announced on Friday. The England international signed for a fee in the region of £2.5 million, with the deal allowed to take place outside the transfer window as part of the terms of the initial loan deal.

 

Kirkland, 25, joined Liverpool in 2001 from Coventry for £6 million, becoming the most expensive keeper in British transfer history.

 

His Anfield career was riddled with injuries, however, and he failed to make a regular impression on the Liverpool first team before being farmed out to West Brom after the arrival of Jose Reina from Villarreal last season.

 

Kirkland suffered a serious kidney injury that kept him out for much of a 20005/6 season which culminated in the Baggies' relegation from the Premiership.

 

However, the 1.91m shot-stopper made his England debut against Greece in August this year, and has impressed since joining Wigan on loan this summer.

 

The Leicestershire-born player becomes Wigan boss Paul Jewell's 10th signing this season, joining Emile Heskey, Fitz Hall, Emerson Boyce, Denny Landzaat, Luis Antonio Valencia, Kevin Kilbane, Tomasz Cywka, David Cotterill, Svetoslav Todorov and Andy Webster at The JJB Stadium.

His reflexes are s****, he doesnt talk or command his box, what exactly is he "world class" at?

 

To be one of the greats you need to have s***loads of ability, he doesnt have it which is why he's now at Wigan.

Kirkland IMO got a raw deal at Liverpool. He was always injured, that much is true, but IMO there is no doubting his quality as a top class keeper. Sure he made a couple of mistakes, but so has Reina. In fact Reina has made very similar mistakes to the ones Kirkland made. In fact maybe more mistakes than Kirkland.

 

A great keeper and I'll never forget what was maybe the best goalkeeping display I can remember at Anfield when he played for Coventry and weas absolutely fantastic that day.

 

Good luck Chris. I for one am sorry you're not at Anfield anymore.

What do you expect when you call Chris f***ing Kirkland "world class"? Reina might also make mistakes but he has terrific ability to go with it, like actually being able to get down low to save shots for one. Take a lot at the amount of goals where Kirkland is just left standing still or makes a slow move down and palms the ball back out, its because he just cant get down quick enough.

 

Fair play for this "world class" keeper choosing Wigan then, with him being as amazing as he is im sure he's turned down some huge worldwide clubs.

I usually go overboard on our players - thinking they are better than they are - but I never once ever saw anything that made me remotely understand why he was so highly rated.

 

Good luck to him for the rest of his career though - seems a decent lad.

He is a good keeper, but very injury prone.

The guy is young and IF he ever manages to get over his injury problems he could become a very good keeper.

Good business for us and possibly for Wigan.

 

On another note, my understanding was that we bought Kirkland for £3 million, with the rest based on clauses. Surely he never met all those clauses!?!

My abiding memory of him playing for us is the goals he conceded with the ball passing very close to him, low down, and he stood rooted to the spot. He just never seemed to have the reactions or body shape of a goalkeeper. How he can be called world class or even premiership class is beyond me. He is unfulfilled potential with no proven track record of staying fit or consistency. Any money is we get is a bonus.
