Socceroos midfielder Harry Kewell can't wait to return home to England, but says his playing comeback is still months away.

The Liverpool star has undergone groin and foot surgery in Sydney over the past couple of months and while his injuries are progressing well he won't get back on to the pitch until at least February.

Kewell has not played since booting Australia into the knock-out stage of Germany's World Cup with an equaliser against Croatia.

"It's going to be a while," Kewell told reporters at his former high school in Sydney's west.

"We're looking past February.

"I'm just itching to get back into playing."

Kewell has been dogged by injuries over the past two years including groin, foot, ankle, achilles and hip.

He continues to suffer an arthritic condition in his left foot and just last week had what he hopes to be the final operation on his groin.

"My foot is a bit sore at the moment and my groin is a bit sore at the moment," Kewell said.

"I just had that done on Friday, but the surgeons are very happy.

"I meet up with them again on Friday and if they give me the all clear I'm back off to England.

"It's been a long hard thing for me, seven weeks so far, and I'm really looking forward to going home and seeing my family."

Kewell is no chance of playing Australia's next friendly against Ghana in November, but said he would try to make the trip to London to support his Socceroo teammates.

But of immediate concern however is the poor start to the league by Liverpool.

Kewell's club sits 11th and 11 points behind leaders Manchester United with just three wins from nine games this season.

But Kewell said the Reds will kick into gear soon.

"What's wrong with them, I don't know?" Kewell asked.

"I think we're playing well, we're just not finishing our chances.

"If you look at our past record we've always had a slow start to the season, but we always pick it up and we know where the back of the net is and it only takes one spark from any one of our great players to do that."

Kewell also added his support to Graham Arnold's work as the Australian team's head coach and said the Socceroos needed a "general" at the helm permanently.

"Graham's doing a good job, but it's not my decision, but again I think we need a great leader," he said.

"I think you need a leader in any team ... In football you need a general I suppose.

"My boss at Liverpool, he is that, and we need that for the Australian team to take us forward.

"Guus (Hiddink) was probably our best one we ever had, I mean, I thoroughly enjoyed working under him and I thought he was one of the best managers I've ever worked for and I think if we can get someone as half as good as him I think we'll go a long way."

He obviously seems very concern, so concern that he's been out clubbing and partying with Lennox Lewis, Barry Hall and Kostya Tsuyu

I saw a snippet in my local mail that said they were at a venue. Are you sure he was "clubbing and partying"? Were there any other reports (I'm in SA) as the one i saw did not say anything, could of been an appearance for a sponsor or anything.

Obviously a serious case of go-out

Lay off him guys, do you think he wants to be injured?

He's back home, on full pay and not worked for months. I'd take injured any day of the week.

What the feck d'ya expect him to do? Sit at home all day and cry about it?

I lost faith in him a l-o-n-g time ago. As soon as he's back in the shop window....sell the injury-prone waster.

Very harsh.

All the injuries he has got seem to have come at times when he was getting into the grove, as unlikely as it may seem at the moment, he does not choose to get injured.

I don't see a lot of point in discussing Kewell, tbh. He's never been that important to us as we've never been able to rely on him holding up physically for long enough.

It looks like everyone has their view on him and no-one is going to change anytime soon.

I think the semi at OT last season summed his whole career up. Play really well for a bit, start to look an integral part of the team then break down in pain and agony.

I've given up on him already. Unfortunately the club will continue to be on the hook for 50k per week until he is flogged in the summer. Can't see the need for him to be in Sydney recouping when he could at least be somewhat involved with the club that he plays for. Surely his missus is still here.

Is the correct answer.

And I was right. :D

I must admit, Harry Kewel has a fantastic strategy - get paid as much as you can, and do as little as possible. My sympathy has completely gone for Mr Kewel. My view is that Liverpool should be looking to offload him. :(

PS: What also made me laugh during that wonderful night of May 25th, 2005 in Istanbul - is that Harry had to come off during the final due to a groin strain/snap or whatever, then after the shoot-out he managed to sprint 75 yards to join the other players in the celebrations. For me, that left a bitter taste in the mouth with regard to Harry Kewell. His missus is quite cute though!
