Tosh Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 really good news for Arsenal - not that contracts mean too much these days...
Benitez Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 thought you couldn't sign contracts of such lenght, or is that football myth #54781216 Contracts may mean fec all to the player, but it'll mean a hefty fee for Arsenal when they sell him to Real Madrid in 2 or 3 years.

Stevie H Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 fantastic footballer. needs to make up his mind which way he's going to go now, but he's got a great manager to help him decide.
Extraordinary Swindle Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 i thought it was a maximum of 5 year Yep. Historic European transfer deal Players' contracts to be a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years.
growler Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 so.... can anyone explain how they got a 8 year contract then?
SkippyjonJones Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 yeah - some space time continuum thingy. Watch Doctor Who and - well - it happens.
Kahnee Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 A five year extension to an existing three years?
John am Rhein Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 thought you couldn't sign contracts of such lenght, or is that football myth #54781216 No, football myth #54781216 is the curious belief that they are worth the paper they are printed on.
Rimbeux Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 (edited) so.... can anyone explain how they got a 8 year contract then? As with Bosman, players under 20-something come under rules that protect the club to a greater extent Edited October 21, 2006 by Rimbeux
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 (edited) except for Barca from where Arsenal nabbed him... Edited October 21, 2006 by Macca
Rimbeux Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 except for Barca from where Arsenal nabbed him... They had to pay some compo
floyd Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 except for Barca from where Arsenal nabbed him...done again with Merida
stressederic Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 They had to pay some compo You'd think he'd be happier about it.
Guest Scot Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Fair play to him. Contracts don't matter. This does nothing but increase his market value.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Contracts don't matter. This does nothing but increase his market value. matters a whole lot. Huge difference between wanting away with two years on your contract as opposed to four or five.
Guest Scot Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 matters a whole lot. Huge difference between wanting away with two years on your contract as opposed to four or five. Yes, it alters market value. Doesn't alter whether he leaves.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 it does alter a player's options though. There won't be many willing to shell out the fee he is likely to command three years from now should he want out. 25mio as opposed to 10-12 mio could mean the difference between Real Madrid and Real, barca, milan and Valencia.
