Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock has signed an extension to his current contract.

The 49-year-old joined the Owls in 2004 and his initial contract would have expired at the end of this season.

But the former Southampton boss has now committed to the Hillsborough club until the summer of 2010.

SHEFFIELD, England (AP) -Sheffield Wednesday fired manager Paul Sturrock on Thursday after the club fell to within a point of last place in the Football League Championship.

Sturrock, manager since August 2004, was fired a day after the club lost 4-0 to Colchester.

"Our league position says it all,'' chairman Dave Allen said. "In spite of strengthening the squad this year, we have not made the desired progress and, to that end, we need a change in the coaching staff.''

Only thing more stupid than that would be giving a rookie international manager a four year contract despite the fact he'd never actually managed anyone before.... :hmm:

eerrr, I think you'll find Mr Mclaren did manage a club, albeit a rather poor one, before he took his current role. ;)
