Apparantly lots of players don't sign them any more because so many get sold. No excuse really though

Margie's mate was quite annoyed - he said "Look, these two kids here have both got your name on the back of the shirts and they worship the ground you walk on - and you can't sign a couple of signatures for them?!"

 

Apparantly Gerrard just said "No" and walked away

 

I was quite shocked when I heard that - Liverpool players usually are pretty good with kids.

Rooney is just as bad apparantly - again most Everton players sign loads of stuff, but when Rooney was at Everton he'd regularly ignore people who wanted autographs and just walk past them.

 

For any professional footballer to do that is completely s*** in my opinion.

I watched that "A year in the life of Gerrard" thing on Sky and in one scene some kids coming running up for an autograph and he is about to blank them but looks over his shoulder and sees the camera and so signs the stuff. He signs some of it but then runs to his car.

 

It must be a pain when you've got lines of people looking for your autograph, and if one kid whats 10 pictures signed you'd understand signing one of them and not the rest to avoid the e-bayers, but they are paid extremely well for living their dream so they should give up the extra 20 minutes to the true kids. They should see it as part of their working day and accept it.

aye, very true. Alas, Ebay has a lot to answer for! Ironic thing is of course, that now most Liverpool autographs on there are fake, Steven Gerrard ones being one of the most faked autograph.

 

If it's at a place where there isnt like hoards of people asking for autographs, they should personalise autographs rather than tell people to do one. Phil Thompson does that (personalise the autograph that is, not tell people to do one) But if it's loads of people, that isn't exactly practical!

I took a relative to a friendly at Millwall a few years ago and all these kids were crowding around the players after the game. Fowler and McManaman stood by the coach and said "Right, we'll do the autographs for a couple of minutes and then we've got to get on the coach" Everyone scrambled for the autograph, not all of them got it. But at least thry didn't come across as arrogant or dismissive

It is the ebay scam at the heart of it. Lots of players in the top rank have been advised by their agents and sponsors not to sign autographs unless it's under strictly controlled circumstances.

 

It makes sense in the marketing world but in the football world it just doesn't look good.

Technically, if you're on club duty - then I think it's a reasonable ask from the fans and unless they're being complet twots, you should sign a number and then make your excuses, If you're in a private capacity, then I think it's fair to say yes or no dependent on how you feel, wehere you are, what you're doing etc.

I agree that in somewhere like a restaurant with the wife they should be left alone. But at a liverpool match and two kids ask for the autograph? Bang out of order and there is no excuse.
