Striker Kuyt 's injury boost Oct 12 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DIRK KUYT has an outside chance of facing Blackburn this weekend after a rapid recovery from injury.

The Dutch claimed Kuyt would be out for two weeks due to ankle ligament damage, but having undergone treatment at Melwood, Rafa Benitez believes his £9m striker is still in contention to feature on Saturday.

"Dirk's injury isn't that bad," said Benitez today.

"We can't say when he will be able to play, but returned on Tuesday and had more treat-ment. It would have been better if we'd been able to treat him for another two days straight after his injury, but we will wait and see how he is before deciding when he can play."

Benitez reported mixed injury news as he welcomed his battered and bruised international stars back to Melwood.

Momo Sissoko and Daniel Agger are the latest concerns.

Agger completed 90 minutes of Denmark's 4-0 win over Liechtenstein last night, but it later emerged he has broken his right hand.

The Danes don't believe the injury means the defender will miss any games. Liverpool hope a special plaster-cast will allow their emerging young centre-half to play.

And Sissoko is also nursing an ankle problem which has prevented him training since he returned from international duty with Mali earlier in the week.

Benitez expects more updates later todayas the rest of his international contingent arrives for training.

"We also have a problem with Momo, who has hurt his ankle," added Benitez. "He's not been able to train since he came back."

Benitez will now be anxious to assess the extent of Agger's injury, but there are plenty of examples of players being allowed to play with a special cast.

Liverpool are also monitoring the fitness of Robbie Fowler, who had to pull out of Tuesday's mini-derbywith a back injury.

Meanwhile, Benitez believes Craig Bellamy'spromotion to the Welsh captaincy will have a positive effect on his club career.

Bellamy earned rave reviews for his role in galvanising a young side which was low in confidence prior to their 3-1 win over Cyprus last night. "It was a good decision by Wales to make Craig captain, and it shows how he's a player who can handle the responsibility," said Benitez.

Great stuff. I still think that Kuyt should be rested ahead of the 2 tough games next week. 2 out of Crouch, Bellamy and Fowler should be given a go over the weekend.

"He hurt it scoring the third goal of his hat-trick, a volley from outside the box, so he told us," Benítez confirmed.

Bolo and Xabi in centre midfield on Saturday then if Momo isn't fit.

Pennant and Gonzales rested for a fortnight and trained with Rafa, Gerrard the same but for a week, Momo essential if he's fit to play, Xabi has played how many minutes in a losing Spain side?

Zenden played for the Ressies midweek, very surprised if he gets near the bench.

Pennant--Gerrard--Momo--Gonzales

for me and lets work them to death.

just trying to open the Gerrard debate again ;)

If Momo ain't fit he'll surely go with Stevie and Xabi in the middle (surely?). Xabi didn't play against Sweden and only came on in the second half yesterday so I expect he'll start. Pennant on the right and he could go with Aurelio, Zenden or Gonzales in front of Riise.

How much of Spain's two games did Xabi play?

We need Agger fit because Hyypia's had two hard games with Finland and will have only got back from Khazakstan this morning and will be f*cked.

He didn't play at all in the loss against Sweden but played the full second half in the friendly win over Argentina.

He should be quite fresh then, as will Gerrard and Zenden, so if Sissoko isn't 100% then he can sit Saturday out, with Man United round the corner.

I can see Fowler starting on Saturday, with Kuyt's knock and Bellamy and Crouch having two international games. Pennant has had two weeks off match wise, so will probably start, so I can see Gerrard playing in the middle.

Well, it's not that had to remember how to spell our players' names is it?

So, did Momo play for Mali earlier this week? Anyone seen a team line-up?

;)

Hyypiä's name seems to be the most difficult to spell. If he was Danish or Norwegian it would be even harder with an 'æ' instead of ä.

Æ, Ø, Å ... fine letters :D

It's just a pain to get the -ä- on certain keyboards, whereas you can pop an accent on Benítez or González or Molière no hassle.

Fäcking Anglophone monoglot globalization.

Liverpool's internationals returned for a late training session last night.

Daniel Agger's broken right hand is not expected to keep him out of action, but Benitez won't risk Dirk Kuyt tomorrow, even though he's recovering well from an ankle problem.

Benitez explained: "I spoke with the doctor, and we think it's better if Kuyt is not involved for this game. But he is better and we hope he will be okay for the next game.

"Robbie Fowler had a problem with his back, but we think he'll be available, and Momo Sissoko's ankle isn't too bad."
