Great debut by the lad.

His performance was... dare I say it? Carra-esque?

Question is can he play like that consistently?

Probaby not, but it's the type of performance Andy O'Brien has given us over the years despite his utter gick-ness. Simplicity, that should be the hallmark of a good centre back's game. McShane was simplicity itself tonight. Attacked everything and wasn't to be pushed off it by that monster Koller. He'll be the toast in Colly's in Kilpedder tonight.

He spent last season on loan at Brighton and was voted Supporters Player of the Year . Just remains to be seen if he can be consistent at a level a couple notches up from that. Fingers crossed!

i hate to say it, but thats EXACTLY who he reminded me off

Very impressed with his performance too. There was a basic intelligence about everything he did. I'm not certain he's got much pace and his lack of height might be an issue but he seems to compensate by reading the game very well. How on earth did Utd let him go and keep O'Shea?

Cruel b*****d! The only images of that muppet that should ever be shown are the ones of him sliding into the goalpost at Anfield.

Ahhh come on now Paul! I'm not saying he's as good as Carra or ever will be. The point I was making was that last night he played in the same manner as Carra. No nonsense defending, read the game well and got stuck in. Was as good a debut by central defender that I can remember.

They're saying he defended à la mode du Carragher in last night's game. They're not saying he should move into Carra's house and bring up his kids and pay his bills.

And I'm saying that might just be a touch premature. Just an opinion like.

The point is that he simplifies the game a la our very own carragher, this isn't really a point for debate Paul, he does do it simple as does Jamie. Maybe I'm wrong. There's nil comparison in terms of experience and their overall game as yet.

Bit like comparing Agger and Hansen's styles. Nothing to compare overall yet but their styles would be quite similar.

And they're all setting themselves up for disappointment. He has played one game.

Who's 'they're'? I think you're patronising whoever you have in mind as I'm sure the Irish fans understand it's his first game and he'll not even be a regular with a fully fit squad. He played and did well, in one game. The basis of his game is simplicity and communication, a bit like Jamie Carragher, the comparisons end there.

Surely it's possible for somebody to play similarly to Carragher for one game? Premature doesn't come into it. He played in his style last night.

He could go on a killing spree to-morrow and be sent down for life and it still wouldn't invalidate the comment about his ninety-odd minutes of Carragher-reminiscent stuff.

Build up those hopes boys.

Don't mind me, I'm just enjoying the debacle.

Are you in pompous mode Paul, or is it your choice to simply ignore the opinions being offered, or maybe you can contribute without being smug? The initial post of mine about signing him was in jest, did that slip on by Paul?

No-one, I repeat not one poster or Irish fan in general is extolling the World Class footballing virtues of Paul McShane. I hope that's clear enough, but if you reckon it's a funny debacle, knock yourself out.

:lol: Hehe, yeah I'm the one in pompous mode.

Irish football is indeed a debacle. I have read (on this very forum) comments from Irish football fans who wanted to see their own country beaten last night. A fair sign that all is not well. IMO, of course.

The topic wasn't Irish football, it was Paul McShane, but it suits your argument. In essence, were it about the debacle that is the FAI and Irish football I would be in agreement with you. Your smugness stemmed from your inability to accept from someone, that a debutant of last night reminded him of Jamie Carragher. Everything else you're offering is a sham.
