system backups

My pc is playing silly beggars and last time i ended up having to reformat.

 

Ideally, because I am lazy and tight, I'd like some free software which will collect everything of use and stick it in an archive. I'd then like to upload it somewhere on t'net for safekeeping. Again for free.

 

Anyone do anything like this or am I going to have sit down with a few dvd's and do it the long way?
