Dalglish Autobiography

Just bought the biography on Dalglish by Stephen Kelly, even though I have'nt finished it yet there were some interesting things in there like Dalglish being bought up as a Rangers fan, him choosing us over the mancs.

 

The main thing was that Johnny Barnes did'nt want to sign for us, which I found really surprising

IIRC there were rumours that he wanted to play in Europe but in the end we were the only club to make a proper attempt to sign him, which is what I always found surprising.

i'm pretty sure even after 1st signing for us, JB's agent was still touting him round europe. It was only when Kenny made JB the 1st 10k per week player in this country (after 2 seasons I think) did those rumours go away.

It said he wanted to go to Italy. Also apparently Arsenal put in offer and he wanted to go there, but for whatever reason they messed him about, so in the end he had no choice but to come to Liverpool

I bought it in St Johns yesterday. 3 quid. Stephen F Kelly is the writer. He didn't have any co operation from Kenny Dalglish.

wasnt this widely known at the time? i recalled (was it on signing or at a contract renewal) that it was publicly known that digger had said that he would sign for liverpool providing no italian clubs came in for him by a certain time, and that he then felt he had work to do to get the kop on his side

 

stroke of genius by dalglish getting digger. despite the maracana, my recollection is that digger's inconsistency or reputation for it had put the other big boys off

Also, there is a difference between an autobiography and biography, Dalglish has already written (helped write in his own words) his autobiography.

 

I believe autobiograhy's first to be honest.

Kelly's biography is really good and well worth reading. The fact that he didn't get co-operation from kenny makes it all the better as it's more honest and you know that you can rely on it. Highly recommend it.

As the first high profile black player to sign for Liverpool, did you feel under extra pressure when you arrived at Anfield?

 

John Barnes: "No, because I see myself as a footballer. I don't see myself as a black footballer. Obviously Howie Gayle had played before as the first black player but I didn't see any more undue pressure because of my colour. I saw pressure because I was coming to a great club like Liverpool, who were the best club in the country at the time probably Europe. The pressure to perform is immense. Not just for me being a black player but for anyone.

 

"Secondly there was a little bit of negativity surrounding my transfer to Liverpool because at the time I remember Liverpool coming in for me in January and I didn't come until the end of the season. There was a lot of speculation that I didn't want to come to Liverpool and wanted to go to Arsenal and was just waiting. So when I first came there was a bit of negativity before I'd actually played. Fortunately for myself Liverpool had their first three games away from home because there was a hole in the Kop and it went really well for me. I created a goal for John Aldridge in the first game against Arsenal. The first game here at Anfield I scored a free-kick and by then they had taken to me. Had the first game been at home - that negativity surrounding my transfer to Liverpool - maybe the crowd could have got on my back, who knows what would have happened. I'm pleased the first three games were away from home because by the time we got back to Anfield, they had really taken to me."

 

 

Obviously he isnt going to put himself in a bad light by saying he was looking at other options, but thats straight from the man himself - admittingly it doesnt answer all the questions in this thread.
