Certainly did more than the so called big guns Gerrard and Lampard.

Macedonia were a better side than most of us were expecting, and it would be difficult to single out an England player who had a good game. Carrick is supposed to be an accurate passer, but it wasn't obvious from that performance. I thought Gary Neville was particularly poor and Lampard was his usual self, i.e. the steaming pile of s*** whose presence in the England team guaranteed that England were never going to progress very far in the World Cup.

Maybe it's prejudice, but I thoought Crouch was man of the match, even though he didn't score.

Gary Neville gave the ball away half a dozen times and gave away freekicks and missed a sitter to boot. Very very very poor display.

Thought the team selection was wrong and England probably under estimated Macedonia. Easier in hindsight but I'd rather have seen a proper sitting defensive player alongside Lampard instead of Carrick. So either King or to a lesser extent, Parker. Maybe even inbred neville #2. england also needed width from Neville and Cole but both were crap and Gerrard & Downing weren't great to say the least. I would've kept Downing on the pitch and brought SWP on for Lampard and pushed Gerrard into the centre. After 70 or so minutes of no width, I can't understand why McClaren brought Wright phillips on the left where he [naturally] kept cutting inside and persisted with Gerrard on the right and Lampard in the middle which wasn't working.

Please, no more Stewart Downing - Wright philips and Lennon when fit, drop Lampard and give Scot Parker a run, carrick is not up to it either. See if we can find someone more mobile than Neville Snr. Get Johnson fit and playing or else give Bent a run out - Rooney is just not at the races.

Still...could be worse, could be Ireland! :D

He was dreadful. All the hype is about him being able to move the ball so well that it makes up for the utter lack of physical presence and failure to put any pressure on the ball when the oppo have it. Yesterday, given the chance to set the tempo and pull the strings, he strolled about deep in his shell and made no impact on the game, took no real responsiblity. He wont be retained on Wed.

I disagree, I thought he did well whenever he had it, the whole team didn't work well together anyway so I think we shouldn't read too much into that performance. Croatia on Wednesday is an acid test and one Carrick will start on merit, Parker will be replacing the suspended Gerrard.

Well, thats how I think Mclaren sees it.

£18m for Carrick just underlines what an absolute steal Xabi was at £10.5m

Alonso hasn't exactly set the world alight this season either.

And the fee was £14m, only people who think United will win the league and/or champions league say £18m, keep in mind there were clauses involved in the deal.

Parker right midfield? Not so sure. I think the manager will bring more steel in for a tough away game, he should know what to expect. I don't think Carrick did anything that was stand out wrong, he just didn't get involved, played it very safe, left the playmaking to Lampard, and that begs the question what's he there for?

I've seen Carrick play some very good games, but that's generally been with some muscle around him, because he is powderpuff and doesn't tackle, barely makes any in a game. That's just one thing that lifts Alonso from him, as is the willingness to actually take full responsibility.

I was shocked that he was starting, thought it was a given that Parker would come in.

Bringing Parker in for Gerrard, when Gerrard is being played out of position on the right would be stupid even for McClaren.

Doesn't mean he won't do it though.

Carrick doesn't even deserve to be in the squad at the moment.

Well, Parkers got the energy to do it, who else is there??

SWP is barely playing, Becks is not even in the squad and Lennon injured.

And Richardson is f***ing s****.

SWP will play, if McLaren didn't think he was up to starting, he wouldn't have picked him. He needs Parker in the middle, there's no way he can go in with the same midfield pair, they'll be eaten alive

I struggle to see what he's good at. He has the odd game where he passes well other than that im not sure what he can do, there just doesnt seem to be anything there. Ferguson obviously knows more than me and has paid that horrendous fee for a reason but im yet to see why and couldnt see why for Spurs either. Players like him are ten a penny in Spain and Argentina then you have the extra special ones like Alonso, Xavi etc which are harder to get.

Absolutely the point for me. It's for no other reason than he's English, otherwise he'd be no more heralded than Tugay at his peak
