I once suggested to a mate of mine, who's a really sound lad but doesn't know that much about footie (ie an Arsenal fan),that Scotland's all-time best XI is possibly better than England's.

I know it's all hypothetical,champ manager rubbish,but it's fun to do.

What do people think the sides would be?

Posted

Scotland would be able to put out a bloody decent side

Dalglish and Law up front

Souness Bremner in the middle of the park

Jimmy Johnston and Jim Baxter on the wings

Billy McNeill and John Greig at centre back

Danny McGrain and Steve Nicol as full backs

and erm Alan Rough in goal

I'm sure I've missed a few obvious candidates out as well.

I don't know many scottish players, but it would have Kenny Dalglish and Hansen it. That'll do for me!

As any Scot will tell you, Hansen was gash for Scotland.

I think Hansen has admitted as much himself.

I started to write a post complaining about N. Ireland and the Republic's absence, then tried to do a N. Ireland all-time XI and struggled. A bunch of blokes from the fifties, George Best, and David Healy up front!

I thought about it for a while, then decided it was too difficult a task!!

If we're doing Wales, do we have to do defenders?

The only good ones we've had have been bluesh*te.

John Charles excepted, of course.

Good but not the best.

Mackay was a midfielder,Willie Miller in his prime was one of the best in the world.

Liddell. Every Red should know how good he was

Goram, was the best keeper Scotland ever had (imho)and he had to compete with Jim Leighton at the same time.

John L is correct Scotland would win, albeit rather easily :D

Depends, are these all time XIs going to be friendly matches, if so he'd be injured anyway.

If you made an all-time British XI, I think the English would be in the minority actually:

Southall

Charles

Moore

Hansen

Best

Charlton

Souness

Barnes

Dalglish

Law

Rush

Jennings, Johnstone, Finney, Matthews, Liddell

British XI:

Shilton

Wright

Blanchflower

Charles

Moore

Matthews

Souness

Charlton

Best

Greaves

Dalglish

I've gone for 4 defenders rather than 2 full backs and 2 center backs - it seems hard to think of any full-backs whose names seem to fit among such company. Danny McGrain and Terry Cooper (maybe Gerry Byrne) were the best i could think of.

I'm inclined to put Dixie Dean in place of Greaves, but that opens a whole pre-WW2 can of worms and I'm not really knowledgeable about that era of football to make judgements: Alex James?, Billy Meredith? etc. etc.
