Spike Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 THinking of how we got Riise from Fulham at the last minute and Momo from the shyte. What are our best 'last minute gazumpings' of signings in your view. Alternatively what are the top five best and worse 'signed from under the noses of' such as when Hysen was nailed on to go to the Mancs and we ended up with him etc etc.
Crazy Horse Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 How many clubs did we beat off for Biscan and Traore?
Guest Jack Bauer Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Kuyt from Newcastle, who fortunately stepped aside.
Michael Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Turning it around, one lucky escape was Silvestre.
Cam Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 How many clubs did we beat off for Biscan and Traore? That's the real agents scandal that Stevens ought to be looking in to - it's not bungs but who's getting 'beaten' off for players. Anyhoo, Silvestre would have been ours - and used at his even worse position of leftback.
Guest The Defender Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Wasn't real sniffing around alonso before we got him....

lfc_col Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Wasn't real sniffing around alonso before we got him.... where'nt the scum sniffing around him aswell
downunder Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Hindsight is great...but we fought off a few for Stan (not Staunton), can't remember who else wanted him but it was a few teams. I think we were all happy to get him then...but it was pre forum days so hard to tell :-)
MarkD Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Back in the day, both Dean Saunders and Mark Wright turned down Everton for us. Harry Kewell?
Kopfaithful Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 there was also Glen Hysen who we all thought would be brilliant after he turned the mancs down. that was a mis-judgement. And didn't Arsenal want Jimmy Carter? ... although they got him in the end.
McBain Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Harry Kewell? £5m was still good business despite his troubles One player we almost signed was Melchiot. Dodged that bullet
Kopfaithful Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 £5m was still good business despite his troubles One player we almost signed was Melchiot. Dodged that bullet you have to take into account though the 70k a week he earns. He's cost us around £17m up to now.
monkey puzzle Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 You have full access to the clubs accounts and wage structure? How are we paying for the stadium?
Cunny Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Hysen was actually very good in his first season.
Kopfaithful Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Hysen was actually very good in his first season. i didn't think so. i thought he was a liability from very early on. You have full access to the clubs accounts and wage structure? How are we paying for the stadium? i'm pretty sure his wages came out in his court case with linekar.
sean Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 I think Silvestre has turned out to be a good signing. I'd have liked him with us.
nvdm Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Missed out on placcy for 2 quid and a Mars bar, apparently.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) I remember BB telling us to forget about it as Heskey was definitely going to spurs.... Also, Valencia had already had a 10 mio bid accepted when we went in for diouf. Edited October 6, 2006 by Anders Honoré
cymrococh Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Cheyrou was off to Lyon for more than we'd offered.
jimmylibel Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Poyet went to Spurs after Chelsea because they offered him a 3 year deal and we'd only offer him 2 years. Duff
Kopfaithful Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Missed out on placcy for 2 quid and a Mars bar, apparently. according to thommo's autobiography, we were never really in for him. we were offered him for 4.5m and weren't interested at that price. about 2 months laster he signed for the mancs for 12m .... only kenyon knows why they paid another 7.5m!
