Jezzman Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Is Neill what we need on the right back? I don't like his brutal way of playing but if we buy him he'll at least be our brutal b*****d.... Benítez may renew his bid for NeillBy Oliver Kay BLACKBURN ROVERS are braced for a renewed approach from Liverpool for their captain, Lucas Neill, when the transfer market reopens in January. The Merseyside club failed with a bid to sign Neill shortly before the transfer window closed on August 31, but Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has no intention of giving up his pursuit of the Australia defender, whom he firmly expects to sign either in January or when his contract at Ewood Park expires at the end of the season. Neill?s hopes of moving to Anfield will hinge on Mark Hughes, the Blackburn manager, and his board. Hughes has indicated that he would prefer to lose him on a free transfer next summer rather than to accept a cut-price fee in January. Liverpool offered little more than £1.5 million in August, when they also discussed the possibility of a part-exchange deal involving Stephen Warnock, and while it remains to be seen whether such a fee would be enough to prompt Blackburn to sell, Benítez is eager to add to his defence. Liverpool are unconcerned by a potential compensation battle with St-Etienne over their bid to sign Nabil El Zhar, the Morocco Under-20 forward. El Zhar signed a four-year contract with Liverpool in August, but the French club insist that they are entitled to a transfer fee. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,428-2389039,00.html
Gravy Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Lucas Neill??? FFS. The cupboard must be fecking bear if we end up with that pr1ck.

I wouldnt be surprised to see him as a squad player who can cover Finnan, and may also be cover for Agger and Carragher, now that Hyppia is getting on a bit. Not sure if that means no Alves next summer though. If the money is available, I would expect us to go for him.

Boca Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Gravy said: Lucas Neill??? FFS. The cupboard must be fecking bear if we end up with that pr1ck. Why do you seem so surprised? Rafa tried to sign him in August so it makes sense that he would go back in for him in January.
nd Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Much as I dislike the man, I think he's a useful, tough, no-nonsense defender with plenty of experience. A bit more needle at the back won't do us any harm. I'd be happy with his signing.

I'm not surprised. I'm just showing as much indignation as I did the first time around that we could be buying that bar steward.

I suspect that the deal will go ahead and Warnock will go the other way. Warnock had a bit of a bust up with Paco in training and isn't happy about not being in the team more regularly. I actually think Neill is a much better player than Warnock, although he is a dirty get.

Try to be gentle ben you talk about Rafa's transfer targets Gravy. Otherwise you risk polarising opinion... Edited October 5, 2006 by Leo No.8

The manager clearly rates Neill. I don't but he thinks he can offer us something. I'd rather have Neill than Kronkamp though and we've currently got the best right back in the league anyway. Why through a wedge on a cover option? If we were to sign Alves I'd like to hope it was to offer an alternative to the misfiring Pennant.

Not saying he's crap, but not the best by any means in my opinion.
Guest PaulMcC Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Finnan is the best right back in the league.
