I know there are a lot of pocket historians on here who like a good factual read, more esepecially so when the narrative is good and flowing. Well I've just finished reading a Pulitzer winner from 1962 called 'The Guns of August' about the true nature of the madness, misunderstanding and sheer bloody-minded arrogance that led to some 20,000,000 lives being lost in the trenches of the western and eastern fronts of World war one, and it's a truly eye-opening and fantastically written book. The monumental stupidity of all those involved leaves one completely nonplussed, it's so horrendous.

Anyone wanting a copy, it's by Barbara Tuchmann, Published by Ballantine and available all over t'internet. ISBN 0-345-38623-X.
