Guest Scot Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Pre-season suggestion of Villa as a top six side looking less stupid every week.
madaboutlfc Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 i saw the game and am really impressed... i think they could be challengers for the 4th spot
Andy @ Allerton Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 They'll drop like a stone once they get a few injuries and suspensions Chelsea suffering a post-European match hangover.
Guest Scot Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 They'll drop like a stone once they get a few injuries and suspensions Chelsea suffering a post-European match hangover. Where will they finish do you think?
Andy @ Allerton Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Where will they finish do you think? About 10th-7th if they're lucky
madaboutlfc Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 i think theyll spend in january and kick on
Cobs Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Pre-season suggestion of Villa as a top six side looking less stupid every week.you trying to self-mocker? O'Neill's doing a good job, which is unsurprising to those who know the game, right Andy?
Andy @ Allerton Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 you trying to self-mocker?O'Neill's doing a good job, which is unsurprising to those who know the game, right Andy? He's picked a good club for his level certainly - but I reckon a top 6th finish once injuries and suspensions kick in is unlikely. He - like many smaller sides is doing very well early on - this usually changes once the small squad is compromised by injury and suspensions taking away quality players - it usually depends if the squad players are good enough to play a system- and usually that answer is no. I think they'd need a stunning amount of very well spent money to appear in January for them to even have a chance - but I can't see any manager helping that many players gel straightaway mid-season
Guest Scot Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 their draw keeps us in contention No, that ship has sailed
Falconhoof Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 All the top teams are dropping points, and none of the title contenders are in form. 6 points between the top ten sides ? No team is out of it yet.
Des Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 (edited) No, that ship has sailed Have a look at your calendar. Then realise that no team is going to run away with it like they have in recent seasons. Of course it's not good but it certainly isn't hopeless. And Andy, get over your O'Neill hatred - it's embarrassing. Edited September 30, 2006 by Des
surf Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 About 10th-7th if they're lucky They'll be delighted with 3rd.
psl Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 O'Neill is a very good manager and is thus far proving so again.

Of course it's not good but it certainly isn't hopeless. And Andy, get over your O'Neill hatred - it's embarrassing. No question you're right on the first point, Des. I said pre-season that 85-88 will win it, think that will be borne out. However I don't think we'll be the team to win it. It's taking us longer to gel this season than it had to for us to be contenders. Typically it will take until early October before a squad with this many new additions will start to fire, we had to hope we'd get it together quicker than that. We didn't, and we still haven't. We're more than capable of going on a good streak, but I think we've got too much work to do if we're to be title challengers.
Maldini Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 I don't think we're out ofthe title race yet, people are assuming we'll keep this form throughout the season, but we were sh*te at the start of last season and picked up from October onwards. The way the league is going I reckon our points total from last year might well be good enough to win it this year, Chelsea aren't the behemoth they once were.

I don't at all think we'll continue with this form, I think we'll be really good this year, but we're stumbling right now and dropping points we can't afford to drop. Games against Sheff U, Bolton and Everton we've got 1 point. We'll get it right, but I think we've already made it more difficult for ourselves than we can overcome. Problem is that we're not the only team to improve. Bear in mind that Arsenal were - relatively - awful last season. They won't be this season. Also, the likes of Everton and Villa will earn more points than they did last term, meaning that while Chelsea will gain fewer so in all likelihood will we.

Like I said though I don't think the winners will be getting 90+ points, we've dropped points against Sheff U, Bolton, Everton and Chelsea (and PSV) while being the better team in all games ( some would argue about the Everton game I suppose). I think we have it in us to go on a run the same as or better than last season's. I know it sounds a bit stupid, but with better luck we'd be top 4 now. How many times have we hit the post this season for example. We're at worst 6 points behind Chelsea and United and we've to play United twice and Chelsea once, it'll be a struggle, but I'm not prepared to write us off yet.

Being the better team means nothing when the points are dropped, Maldini - you know that. We do indeed have it in us to go on a run like last season but were we to do that we'd STILL not win the league. We need other teams to do a great deal less well and our part in that is beating them. We NEED to get 4 from United and 3 from Chelsea or we're stuffed. I'm not too concerned though. We bought a truckload of new people - we needed to - and it's unfair to expect that all to work fantastically well in September. Life is almost never like that.
Maldini Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Yeah, it is a disappointing start though, if only because we've deserved more.
madaboutlfc Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 i dont think the ship has sailed.. it will sail when we are like 10 points behind in jan.. 6 points is relatively easier to make considering where we were last season.. our problem is we need to get on a run and build confidence.. our problem is now we are unbalanced as a team because of the more options we have now
Guest Scot Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 our problem is now we are unbalanced as a team because of the more options we have now Completely agree. We're not yet settled, and settling will take a shade longer. This season is too soon for us.
