Very interesting this.

I've always said that I feel when referees get too high profile, they start to feel they need to be the centre of attention and in turn give more cards and spoil some potentially good games between the top sides.

And if you look at the referees table, already so far for this season you'll see Styles, Riley, Rennie, Poll and Webb as the top five showers of cards. Speaks volumes that I think. You see the names Atkinson, Dowd, Walton, Foy and Marriner down at the bottom. Much less high profie referees.

So the question is why should profile relate directly to the number of cards you show? The answer is quite simply that is shouldn't - this is an excellent example of why the best known referees are often the worst, and the least able to control games without the use of their notebook.

Referees Table

The media have too much influence in football as a whole. Referees are affected as badly as anybody involved with the game.

i'd say it's fairly unwise to make such pronouncements with only 3 or 4 games as evidence.

Precisely.

Is Leo suggesting that Atkinson, Dowd, Walton, Foy and Marriner are out of the title race after only 4 games?
