Sports Personality Of The Year

After such a scheidt World Cup for England, there's no way a footballer will get it.

Jenson Button actually won a Grand Prix after about 500 attempts, Andy Murray got to the 3rd round in the US Open (Woo-Hoo!) and Monty What's-is-name took a couple of wickets in a Test. That's the sort of thing that's usually enough to crack it, isn't it?

Plenty of obvious candidates if you look outside of the sports the media obsesses with. Their ignorance shouldn't be a bar to world class athletes winning the award.

My top 5 in terms of world class achievement would be (in alphabetical order):

Ben Ainslie

Joe Calzaghe

Nicole Cooke

Tim Don

Zara Phillips

All have won at the very highest level in their chosen sports. It says a lot about the narrow focus of the UK sports media that they keep suggesting people who shouldn't be anywhere near the award e.g.

Monty Panesar - two decents Tests out of seven v Pakistan and Sri Lanka and England don't trust him to bowl in a one day match. Seems to be popular because he wears a head scarf and has a beard and the fans don't really know if they're laughing at him or with him yet. Giving the award to Monty would smack of tokenism when there are players in the same side such as Ian Bell and Alistair Cook who have had better years than him.

Andy Murray - had a great season for a promising player, but that's what he remains. Only one tournament victory and nowhere near in any of the grand slam events, which is where real achievement has to be judged. Give him the young sports personality award if you have to.

Jenson Button - yes let's reward someone who took 113 races to get his first win. While you're at it why not give the overseas award to Felipe Massa, after all he only took him half as many races to do the same as Jenson.

And don't get me started on the bloody Ryder Cup. Already seen people suggesting that Europe should win the team award if they win the Cup next week. It's the Emperor's New Clothes of sporting events. Two teams invited to take part every two years with a roughly 50:50 chance of winning. Great achievement that. Might as well give the team award to Oxford as they bravely defeated Cambridge in the boat race this year. The Ryder Cup is an over-bloated corporate beanfeast which lost the plot as a sporting contest years ago. Oooh give it to Colin Montgomerie if he sinks the winning putt ...

I agree with all of that except for Monty Panesar. No cricketer should ever win a sports award. Cricket is a pastime or a hobby not a sport.

If you can play a sport in the same foot wear you go to work in then for me it's a hobbie. Cricket, Monopoly, darts, Snooker, bowling etc. and all competitive hobbies not sports.

:)

Steven Gerrard should win it. His great season for us, the match winning performance in the FA Cup and ever since the World Cup, he has been Englands best player.

it's sports PERSONALITY of the year though

How come so many England cricketers are currently out with injuries then?

And the award to completly missing the point of Sports Personality of the year award goes to...Rushian!

If it is for sports achievment of the year then I totally agree but its not. Unfortunatly it has to be influenced by the media because they are the ones responsible for creating these personalities.

Which makes Golf what? The sporting equivalent of somnambulism?

BTW - Cricketers have specialised 'spiked' trainers - not ordinary shoes. Agree with the rest though.

I sa sadly true - it's about the most populist and preferably photogenic person who happens to have not actually disgraced themselves in their chosen field within the last 12 months.

Gerrard should be in with a shout on this basis for the cup-final alone. Zara Philips won't get it because as much as the fawning oxbridge types at the BBC in search of a knighthood might want to give it to her (fnar) as I believe they once did to her mother, times have changed and the public at large doesn't give a toss about horsey types and what is still seen essentially (partly thanks to the crusty commentators) as a blue-blood event.

I think that shows you that the winners are usually the medias darlings rather than the greates sporting achievement of the year. sad but true.

All jokes aside, Peter Crouch should get it.

I disagree.

stop making a mascott out of him simply because he gets such a harsh deal.... and please don't talk to me about his recent form... heard enough about that.

i think it actually shows that the winners are more often than not World or Olympic Champion in their sport.

f*** off with your assumptions about my motives. The award is sports personality of the year, has any sportsman dominated the national consciousness as much as Peter Crouch this year?

In any normal year there would be an outstanding candidate whose achievements would make them favourites, no British sportsperson has really excelled in a major sport this year. Peter Crouch is the closest to that, therefore he should win.

depends on your definition of "major sport".
