Jezzman Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 This season we've used Aurelio, Riise, Gonzalez and even little Luis on the left wing and I guess Kewell would be in with a shout if he was fit as well. I know Riise's injury problems have probably sparked some of the rotation in our left side but it can't only be that, there must be other explanations to it. Is Rafa in doubt as to who's the best suited for our left wing?Is it just a matter of using the player who's 110% ready (squad rotation)? Is Rafa using different players because of their individual strengths, looking at the opposition as well? What do you reckon and who would you play out wide if you had to chose?
psl Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 I think Kewell would be more than in with a shout, I'd say he's still first choice.
DJDunk Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 I'd be happy if we even used our wingers properly in a game Hate to see this narrow method of play where the frontmen just end up running into defenders and losing possession. We've got seriously pacey wingers on both sides (Gonzales and Pennant would be my choice), so we really should be using them as much as possible and whipping balls into the box.

Plus he's shown great ability there in Spain and for Chile and needs to get a run of games going to get use to teh Premiership. Once Kewell is fit I'd imagine he'd be pushed quite hard to start unless he's shown exceptional form, so for me it's Gonzalez til Kewell is fit and then make another decision based on form/fitness.

Lee W Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 We miss the Kewell we saw against Chelsea especially, but I cannot see a way back for him into the side after all these injuries. He's still under diagnosis in Oz isn't he ? I just don't think he's gonna reach the form he showed for Leeds or us in the first 4-5 months with us. I haven't seen enough of Gonzalez to judge, but from what I've seen of Aurelio he looks very awkward going forward - looks more of a defender to me.
realtarragona Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Aurelio, Riise and Warnock are all left backs and I wouldn't start Garcia there especially if Gerrard is on the right, so Gonzalez should get a run of games there.
Stevie H Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 i think gonzalez needs a bit of a run of games there to get settled into it.
G Richards Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 We need at least one out and out winger on the pitch, so we should never play Garcia and Gerrard on the flanks in the same game. Depending on where Gerrard is playing, we need either Pennant or Gonzalez on the pitch for me. I want to see more of Gonzalez, as he could be very good, but he just hasn't had enough time to adjust and show us what he can do yet. I agree that Riise and Aurelio are not really out and out left wingers. options.
Skillz Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 We definately miss Harry. His critics will say he didnt score enough last year but he played 40 games as a true LW because we had SG as RW with a license. This meant Harry rarely found himself in a scoring position but he contributed to our lead up play all year. Unfortunately as soon as Harry puts in 100% he breaks down and the Chelsea FA cup Semi is a perfect example. He was at his best in that game and showed what he is capable of. Unfortunately he broke down again and it is now clear if he does not find a cure he is a great squad player only, not the star he should be.

I get the sense that Rafa doesn't fully trust him yet- unless I'm mistaken, he's only started 1 competitive game for us so far. I would really like to see him start several games in a row to help him settle faster. Although he's only shown flashes so far, as we saw from his performances in Spain last season, he'll be able to do a job on the left for us.

We bought the flaming wingers - we should play them both, to get them match fit and settled in, and get the forwards used to the service And stop playing Zenden in CM! HE's not a CMer, and he's not a CMer of sufficient quality to play for LFC.
Elisha_Scott Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 I think we may try someone new there tomorrow.

liverbird04 Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 As long as Bellamy plays whether its out wide or upfront he'll cause chelsea problems ....my biggest worry is that bellamy won't play but I just can't see that happening. He's due to score as is kuyt .

Hodgson for Chelsea Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Daily Heil says Gerrard to play left wing. Could be a stroke of genius as he would be able to cut in and (if he's playing) challenge Cole for pace. Either way I think Maureen will have to adapt his tactics to defend against it.
