I guess this Spanish club (that we haven't heard of) is not able to pay the generous terms that Diao is getting under the contract that Houllier so rashly offered him. That being the case, you can't really blame him for holding the club to their contract.

Benítez threat on Diao future

Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has expressed bewilderment at Salif Diao?s decision to reject a move to Recreativo de Huelva and said that the Senegal midfield player will be lucky to get a game for the club?s reserve team this season. Diao had agreed to join the Primera Liga club before the close of the transfer window, only to pull out of the deal.

?As a player, the most important thing is to play. If you are not playing, you can?t show people that you are fit and a good player,? Benítez said. ?He is training normally and maybe it?s a possibility he can play in the reserves, but at the moment we have young players and they have more options than him.?

fine, i'll go to bed then.

Was talking about Rafa bringing it up now of all times! :D

Is that really a pop? All he's saying is that he doesn't understand why the player would want to stay at the club if he's not part of the managers plans and he can only give him reserve team football.

When does the f*****'s contract run out anyway? Our worst signing ever IMO, including Diouf.

I think it was an "impulse buy" after Senegal had done well in the World Cup. I don't believe the club had done any proper scouting on him. Anyone who had actually watched him play a few games would have known that Diao may be a fine athlete but he is just not a footballer.

It's as much of a go as Rafa has on anyone. It is rather damning in my opinion. He's getting top class wages for barely getting in the reserve team. Have some pride Diao, do us all a favour and leave. Please.

Don't think so - it's pretty much well documented now that Diouf and Diao were lined up some time before the world cup and had agreed the move.

I think the deal was sorted out pre-World Cup but I do think it was well dodgy.

Everyone says this, but documented where ?

If we're taking it on faith that the club scouted Diao properly then fine, there's other players that we made a mistake on that noone has since claimed we bought on a whim.

But lets not be claiming that there's evidence when we're as much in the dark as the next fan.

I'm certain I read that Diao was in the bag before the France-Senegal game albeit he was only going to come over to England after 6 months. (That plan got scrapped because of an injury concern over Gerrard.)

I'm sorry, I always thought it was the CEOP that negotiated contratcs???

Difficult to buy a player on a whim after a good World Cup when the club announced that we had signed Diouf and were close to signing Diao after the first match of said World Cup though.

Incidentally Diao was also being lined up by Wenger that summer if Vieira had left - probably why we moved quickly and expensively.
